Lucky Mewtwo 71,1%

Power up this Lucky Mewtwo 71,1% (11/10/11) or just throw away?
I already have a 98% (not lucky) maximized.

The limiting factor for Mewtwo is RC, not dust.
I wouldn't power it up.

Sigh, all the posters above make an incorrect assumption/statement.

The assumption is that Candy is more limiting factor than dust.

That is true for probably most players. But if your raid to catch ratio is say 1 raid:30 catches. You would find Dust more limiting than candy.

The answer is "What do you find limiting up what power up? Lack of Good Candy or Lack of Dust.?

If Candy: Don't power it
If Dust: Go ahead. You won't notice a big preformancy difference and you can put the dust savings into whatever else.

Or go option3: I don't find myself using Mew2 often enough to power up a 2nd one, regardless of dust or candy question.

To max out a normal level 20 mon you need 248 candy and 225k dust. Assuming you only do legendary raids and average 7 bundles, you would get on average 3,7 rare candy per raid, so 67 raids to max. 225k at let's say 115 dust on average per catch makes for 1960 catches. Which arrives at a 1/29 ratio, pretty close to your 1/30, which is honestly a pretty good guess if you didn't do any math. But that's not the whole truth. We didn't account for dust from hatches, gifts, research or the raids yet. Just the 67 raids will generate 40,2k dust, which bumps the ratio to 24 catches per raid by itself. Reality is probably that you need to catch less than 15 mons per raid done to have dust be more of a limiting factor and this is assuming nearly the best possible average RC gain from the raiding.

I honestly can't imagine what kind of a playstyle would make it possible to generate RC at a faster rate than dust. Possibly a completely spawn-dead zone that has gyms and spawns raids, but I imagine the number of players in such conditions would be very small, because why would you play if the core mechanic of the game is inaccessible to you?

Personally I will continue to unconditionally assume that RC is more of a limiting factor for everyone until I see a person who legit is more limited by dust. I have not seen one so far.

You forgot to think about what percentage raids are from EX raids getting you 3-6 candy per mew2.

I said Candy, not Rare Candy.

I thought about that but the post was getting overly complicated already. For the vast majority of players, most of their candy to power up Mewtwo will be rare candy. Let's estimate it quickly just for curiosity. In an optimal case, raiding every day, every 8th raid is a Mewtwo, and assuming you always catch them with a pinap and transfer all but the first one, you get 7 extra candy per 8 raids, which means 248 is reached with just 61 raids. This takes the 1/24 ratio to 1/26. I assume no trading the Mewtwos for distance since the player lives in an area with minimal spawn activity, which likely means minimal access to other players with distance mons.

Of course if we want to take this to extremes, we could argue that every second raid can be an EX raid, but at that point we're looking at a player who does a single legendary raid every week, gets an EX invite, attends every EX raid and goes like that for 17 weeks to collect their candy to power up Mewtwo. And for them to be more limited by dust, they'd have to catch less than 95 pokemon per week, incubate no eggs, do no research that awards dust and never open gifts. I just can not fathom a situation where someone actually plays this way. Doesn't mean it can't happen, but I'm not going to assume anyone would be in such a weird place with the game unless they specifically state so.

Yes, it's overly complicated but I guessed at the 30-1 ratio mainly just by ballparking my own Collector-Battle Legend Medals.

It's not a question of location, as much as a question do you like catching pokemon or battling pokeman. There are outliers on each end of that choice.

I\m one such: 30461 Catches, 1166 Raids. Dust does get modified by things star pieces, incubators, events, and gifts, more than candy does. But candy occasionally does too.

I'm currently sitting at 395 Mew2 Candy, 282 RC and 1.1 Million Dust. So for me, I'd have enough Candy sitting around to max it, and be not far off remaxing another with better IVs. And consider I dump 50 RC somewhere for Inventory Management whenever I hit 300 RC. Meanwhile Saving 124k dust is about 10% of total.

I am not a Mew2 fan as I barely ever use mine, but that's not to say I wouldn't think about powering up a lucky if the dust cost was low enough just to have a focus blast variant.

A lot of it isn't a question of direct cost, it's a question of opportunity cost. Powering up X, means not having Dust to Power up Y and Rare Candies.

Have to say, your ratio is pretty extreme. Partly why I say that it seems weird to have dust as a more limiting factor is that a pogo plus is such a good one-time investment that I can't imagine anyone spending money on raid passes before they get a plus, which is why I completely discounted the possibility of someone raiding a lot and having that low of a catches per raid ratio. And if you buy that many passes, you've probably gotten a fair pile of incubators from boxes as well, which would also generate a lot of dust. I spent hundreds of euros on the game before I went back to f2p and I only have 900 raids completed, so I assume your investment tops mine. 105k+ catches means I'm at the opposite end of the spectrum, I almost have a maxed pokemon for each 10 raids I've done.

You're absolutely right about the opportunity cost with your existing resources and acting based on that is very much correct for your situation. Comparing the rate of acquisition is pretty much only useful for a theoretical situation.

I got a Gotcha when I was level 39.

The other part of the equation when you are a big raider vs catcher is that if you have a say a 70% Catch Ratio, your getting catch candy. This means your need for Rare Candy is reduced as well.

Granted Regis suck so I've been 1 pass a day since they started.

For example, I caught 94 Kyogres with my lowest catch ratio out of 154. Although after they fixed some of the bugs my ratio went up, and I would even throw Pinaps with balls above 9. I've maxed 3 Kyogres and 3 Level 30. One of which were weather boosted. 6 of which were shiny. Ive transfered/traded 50 Kyogre.

Kyogre Candy
Direct Catch: 94*3 = 282
Pinup Approx: 8*3 = 24
Transferred is apporximately 125 candy
I average probably more than 7 Bundles + Extra Candy Events so say 4 RC * 154 = 608

So Kygore Raiding which is one of the more desirable Pokemon
My total Kyogre imput sits at about 1039

My Kyogre expenditure is 3 Level 40, 3 Level 30 (1 from 25).
248*3 = 744
66*2 = 132
38*1 = 38
914 Candy

Meaning just raiding Kyogre alone, has yielded me over 100 more candy for Kyogre than I have spent on Kyogre. Meanwhile, thats not close to true for dust.

Most legendaries I've probably far more extreme in generating more candy than using.

In fact, that;s a good way to think of it, do you raid a pokemon for more candy than you plan on candy spending during powering up. If so, candy becomes less the limiter than dust.

Your area must be pretty devoid of spawns if you get so few catches even with a gotcha. No helping that I guess.

For comparison, I caught 37 Kyogres out of 47 (had no problems even before they made it easier to throw at, got lots of practice with side-swerving water mons), about 2 with Pinap and transferred 32. 35*3+2*6+32 = 149. I average probably 6 bundles so 3,2 RC per raid for 150 total. I'm at 42 extra Kyogre candy and 9 extra RC left over after my investment, which would all be just extra RC had I waited until the rerun to power up my 1 Kyogre. I'm actually a bit surprised that I netted more than I spent.

No sustainable amount of raiding could make candy less of a limiter than dust for me because I live in a city with good spawn areas. If I want to raid more than 1 legendary per day, I'll need to go to the city centrum, which means even with just autocatch I'll generate 30k+ dust per day. Only at the most extreme pace of hopping into a raid car and doing 30 raids in a day I'll get to your catches/raid ratio.

Its not devoid of spawns, its just lack of enjoyabiliy catching vs enjoying battling. Obviously you like catching more than I do.

One interesting difference is that I don't transfer Legendaries for only 1 candy.

It's not a question of your getting to my ratio, the original point was if you Raid enough it's possible that Candy becomes less a limiter than dust.

You don't even need to be as much a outlier as I might be, you just need to raid enough that your Candy from raiding that pokemon exceeds the amount you of candy needed to reach your goal.

A lot of it is are you a collector, or do you just power up pokemon that are useful. That question makes a HUGE difference on how much Candy is a limiter vs dust. Take Suicine. My goal is Zero. So all RC I got from Suicine is available for other pokemon.

Depending on how much you raid + and how many pokemon of each legendary you want to power up, Candy might not be as much as a limiter

You both already developed your points widely already. Just wanted to add this: It also depends if the player is also maxing many non legendaries for which RC is not necessary. For example, one may be maxing an entire army of Machamps for Tyranitar and the Regis. Machop candy is much easier to get so RC is not necessary and you can continue piling them, while dust is heavily pumped into the Machamps to the point it can become the limiting factor.

Not so long ago, Stardust was always the limiting factor when powering up pokemon. Weather boosts, community days, many events, star pieces, raids and gifts have changed that, but I have kept a habit of considering stardust is rare. But things are easier nowadays :)

Depends on your needs: Do you think you need another Mewtwo, perhaps with a different moveset?

If yes, then:
* If you can do regular Mewtwo raids, it means you have a good chance of catching a better one, so wait.
* Else, if your rare candy supply is high, you can go ahead and power it up. Even with 71% IVs it's still a fantastic attacker and the saved dust from being lucky is neat.
* Else, consider saving your few rare candies for when you really need to power up a legendary for a specific need. Few rare candies means you must be very selective on who you power up, and in that case IVs are more important.

If no, then just save this Mewtwo and don't power it up. The question will rise again when you need a psychic/fighting/ghost attacker or a strong generalist, then maybe you'll have other options to chose from.
