Did your friends catch the registeel? Because if you have only 10 instinct members, it would be hard to get more than 8 or 9 balls depending on person in this case, unless you all battle in one private group (And i would advise that to spare troubles because team contribution is slightly more important than gym control.)

The luckiest GRB clutch ever
This morning we had a registeel raid at one of our gyms (team instinct) and as theres only 10 or so of us in comparison to the 50+ on the other teams, we're at a huge disadvantage in numbers.
However, we make up for what we lack in numbers with clever gym work, we had a gym loaded with blissey, venusaur, slaking, gengar, dragonite, Tyranitar, and all were super low on motivation. More or less the last second before the blissey would have been knocked out, I GRB'd, and we were able to hold the gym because we use dedicated anti machamp gym set ups (because everyone else spams the tanky normal types, so they default to their fighting types) to make them take longer to beat, but not only were we (I didnt go to the raid because it was a downpour, but my teammates did, they had cars) able to get the gym bonus But that wasn't the lucky part, the lucky part was getting a chansey and larvitar candy from only one berry each
Anyone else ever had similar GRB getting candy stories?
