Long-term planning ruined by bad timing?
After I managed to solo Machamp and Gengar (at least the easiest charged moves), I started to think about building a team for Omastar, starting with my three level 30 grass attacker: a Venusaur with VW/Solar, an Exeggutor with BS/Solar and an Exeggutor with Conf/Solar,
I was delighted to hatch a perfect Bulbasaur (which I immediately evolved into a Venusaur with RL/Solar) and, just a few hours later, catch my first wonder Treecko (which I immediately evolved into a Sceptile with BS/LB).
The next day, Omastar was no longer a raid boss, and two weeks later, Niantic announced that the next community day would feature Bulbasaur (so my perfect one could never learn Frenzy Plant because it was evolved too early).
This makes me reluctant to build a Jynx solo team, as acquiring my first Metagross (and second Tyranitar) may take a few months. Share similar incidents where your long-term in-game plans were ruined by untimely changes. How did this influence how you play?

Regarding Jynx, a high level team of Flareons can fill any blank spots you have in your team. And your Omastar team will surely be useful against other potential raid bosses in the future.
As for long term planning, I won't be evolving my Lombre which is sitting at 99 candy, Feebas, Wailmer, Swablu or any other special evolutions due to potential Research requirements in the future.
What level are you? I think one of the most helpful changes is being able catch Pokemon above level 30. Now that only play casually, I only invest in my 100% Pokemon and Pokemon significantly over level 30, to avoid having to power them up. I have personally decided to max out my previously maxed Pokemon (before they raised the level on that) and take advantage of TMs.
I guess I look for Pokemon that will always be useful and won't be significantly outclassed in the future (no counting legendaries.) I generally have one of each type maxed out, with a couple more high levels of very useful Pokemon like Machamp, Dragonite, Tyranitar, and Golem.
I would not advise investing in Pokemon for a single raid boss.
I wouldn't worry about missing out on a raid boss. This has happened to me a few times. The first time, I was planning for Exeggutor when it phased out. Guess what: It came back.
This also happened to me for Gengar (came back), Jynx (came back) and Ninetales.
The raids are actually cycling rather frequently now. Each time we get a new Legendary Raid boss, it comes with a whole new crop of raids which can include current raids, includes a lot of returning raids, and a few new ones.
Your team will have their chance.
Same here. I soloed Omastar with a good eggy and venusaur, the rest of my team were disposable weather boosted victreebels and vileplume with a bit of help from my grown up groudon. Investment in these 3 key players won’t be in vain anyway for the future, and plus there are community days to reinforce such tem even more. I’m sure there’ll be some use for them someday again.
I had a long-term plan to get golden Ace Trainer medal which didn't go too well.
A team for Jynx should not be that hard to build since most good fire mons are viable at level 30. Your single Tyranitar is a great asset and besides it you only really need 5 Flareons at level 30 with anything but the worst moveset. So get to catching those weatherboosted Eevees.
