The other day I threw a red ball at what turned out to be a CP 1200 Pidgeot (not Pidgey). The circle was dark red, and I hit it with a nice throw, not great. Caught it on the first ball, got really lucky, wind buffed for 625 dust. Sometimes luck breaks one way, sometimes the other. Randomness.
I had a CP 112 Weedle jump out of an Excellent Curveball with a Red Ball yesterday. Then it jumped out of a Great Curveball with a Great Ball. Then it jumped out of a Great Curveball with a Razzberry. For the hell of it (and to free up some bag space) I used a Golden Razzberry and a Great Ball, and got a Curveball and a Great Throw... and the (bleep)er still jumped out. Then when I said "(bleep) it." and randomly threw a Red Ball at it with no attempt to do anything but hit it, I caught it with that Red Ball and no bonus at all. No curve. No nice. No Berry.
Sometimes it's just the RNG.
