Legendary catch

I just encountered Ho-oh after winning a raid. While trying to catch it, it drifted to the right. Remember reading here that I could walk away from the sequence and then return, so I tried to do that.
But it didn’t work. After I clicked the flee button and tried to click on the Raid Tower I kept getting network errors. Missed my chance to catch a Ho-Oh :-(
What did I do wrong?

Sorry to hear that. There seems to be global issues with trying to interact with gyms right now, meaning you did nothing wrong, but had bad luck with timing :(

Research reward encounters allow you to flee and return, but raid boss encounters do not.

They used to, as long as you went back to the gym within about 10 minutes, and also assuming the raid hasn't expired completely. Not sure if that's still the case.

As long as the raid is still active, you can an and go back to the catch sequence within 10 mins. You just need to interact with the gym again.

Ho-Oh...arguably the biggest target in the game, drifted right and you decided you couldn't hit it? His circle takes up half the screen.

When you have one of the easiest targets in the game, don't worry if it drifts right.

Just throw the ball and catch it.

Groudon would probably give him a run for his money but your point is still valid. I'm pretty sure the whole reason I have as many Ho-oh as I do is because his circle is stupid huge, making for easy curved great/excellent throws.

In the future, just wait out any legendary movement rather than restarting. The chance of an error happening like you got is not insignificant.

In the case of HoOh, I can see waiting for it to descend when it flies up high (I do this), but its slight movement to the right shouldn't stop you from throwing at it by any means. A "straight curve" to the center of the screen will still hit inside an excellent-sized circle for it.

I was under the impression it was a risk-free operation, that's why I decided to go out of the catch sequence, but I agree that the drift to the right, especially knowing what I know now, was not necessarily a good reason to try. You live and you learn :-)

For the future, if you have a phone that can handle it, going in and out of AR+ mode also re-centers the Pokemon without having to flee the encounter. I do it all the time.
