Lapras Legacy -- CP Curiosity

The other Lapras thread made me think of a long standing curiosity and whether anyone has ever tried to test results (or even how)

I have a Legacy Lapras at 2600+ CP sitting in a Gym right now, it will become 2200-2300 when I get it back.

But the question is, if someone attacks the Gym are they facing a 2600+ Lapras with old base stats, or is the CP an illusion and they are really facing a 2200-2300 Lapras.

The same thing happened when they changed the Stat Formula originally. All the Pokemon CPs in gyms didn't change. So maybe back then when it happened to every pokemon instead of just Lapras someone tested this.

Yeah, a geeky curiosity question, but did anyone else wonder it, or better yet test it

You could fight against the gym yourself to try to see, and it would gain a little bit of prestige. I would assume it is using the old stats based on when it was placed in the gym. If it is low enough in the gym that you can use pokemon that are half its CP to reach it, then you could tell based on the ammount of prestige you gain.

Another slightly similar situation, if I change the name of one of my pokemon after placing it in a gym, it still has the old name when I look at the gym or fight it.
