Keep farming Karps or forget it

I have been farming Karps from various water spots for a few months trying to get a DT/O Gyarados without success. I have 3 maxed out Gyr's plus 7 others (keep or bin yet to decide) and have 7 Karp at 91% or better with levels from 5.5 up to 30....do I still keep trying for the DT/O

Just keep playing, catch all and avoid farming (time wasting disappointment) or drive to nests...

I haven't driven far to a nest in a long long long time...
Prob why I don't even have a Gyarados yet (level 35).

I encounter about 2-3 nests a day of Karp as my job for the environment agency takes me about 60 kms up and down the River Thames so a poke plus catches most of them

I guess it really depends on why.

If you want double dragon moves for a Dragonite Attacker, I'd recommend working on an Ice Pokemon instead.

If you want it as a Defender, the only thing that Matters is Dragon Tail. Gyrados's with DT are decent defenders. Especially if you can max them out to the point the Level 30 Electrics (since so few power up attackers past 30) can't beat them before HP. So if its for Defense that DT/HP one is worth powering up. so is DT/Crunch

If you want it as a General Attacker. Into say Blissey or Snorlax, or multiples. Again DT/HP is the best attacking moveset, or if you like to dodge a lot Bite/HP

Long story short:
Given what you have, no I would power up current ones.
DT/Crunch & DT/HP & perhaps Bite/HP I would max out before saving up for another.

Only Gyrados I would never power up is Bite/Outrage.

I wouldn't power up Bite/Crunch either unless Mew2 comes out and you lack any better option.

Aww really? I powered up my bite outrage but it is perfect and I don't think the moveset is that bad, I got him to defend and the IV place him high :)

If all you want is high CP to sit on top of a Gym or you like Trophy Aspect of 100% Pokemon.

Sure power it up.

But as a Move Set Usefulness: It is the Worst Moveset Gary has atm. ((Assuming Bite/Crunch becomes useful for Mew2))

B/O is a good alternative for attacking Dragonite when I can't be bothered to scroll all the way down to find my Lapras.
B/O with type advantage is better than B/H as a generalist and close to Dt/O with type advantage.

...
And of course, when you say "Only Gyrados I would never power up" you are forgetting entirely about Twister. THAT is, without any debate, the worst move for Gyarados and has no uses.

Well yeah, but I didn't talk about Legacy Pokemon.

I don't think I'd power of DB/Pulse or Bite/Pulse either for that matter.

DT/O isn't strong at all, 3.9 seconds cooldown is quite long for dodging. And they all without STAB. On gym defense, whatever its moveset, put it in the gyms.

Like dondon said, Gyarados is neither a good generalist nor an elite specialist.

Wait, you have already caught 2 shiny magikarps and even 4 Laprases? Unbelievable!

Dondon isn't god.

In fact, he's simply wrong on Gary. Well not really wrong on Gary.

He's wrong when all the Data he claims to prize so highly show that Gary often Outpreforms the Pokemon he has in Tier2.5 "Glass Canon" Tier.

Of course, it could be as simple as moving the Glass Canon Tier down to Tier3 and making it part of Tier3.

His analysis comparing Gary to Dragonite/Tier2 is right on.

His analysis comparing Gary to Tier2.5 is lacking.

He also shows no analysis comparing Gary to other Tier3 Options.

Without Comparing Gary to the rest of Tier3 as well as Tier2.5. You can't say Gary is placed correctly.
