You listed many good points, but for a gym defender the HP is just too important and unfortunately this, otherwise really awesome Pokèmon, just doesn't qualify for even a mid-tier defender. There are simply too many other Pokémon with similar offensive capabilities but with higher HP. This is indeed a problem with many Pokémon as of now. Hopefully we could see a reduced effect of stamina towards Pokémon's HP to get a lot more viable Pokémon.
Kabuto/Kabutops Question
I have hatched a few Kabutops from 10km eggs and now have enough candy (68) to evolve which needs 50.
I don't have a perfect (>90% IV) one otherwise I would just evolve that one but I have two that are in the 80-84% range.
The question(s) I have is
1) is Kabutops even that important to be worrying about IV's? It is #41 on max CP list which is actually decent. It's Stone Edge move shows 30DPS so if I'm lucky it'll be decent in battles but it's not like it's a Dragonite, Snorlax, or Lapras/Vaporeon for gym defender.
It's attack and defense stats though at max is up there with some of them (Snorlax/Lapras) at 190 a piece and even though it's Stamina and max HP is a bit lower at 106hp max I could always use it as a middle tier defender on a gym forcing attackers to know their types because it's not the typical vaporeon/snorlax/dragonite.
And the other question I guess that matters is...
2) Should I wait and catch a better Kabutops/Kabuto and try to find one with 90&+ IV's (plus save all these candy i have for power ups) OR go ahead with one of these two (waste 50/68 candies) I already have and hope for Stones Edge move?
See the picture.
The 605cp top Kabuto is not going to have more than 12 or 13 Stamina. It also won't have higher than 11,12,or 13 Attack meaning it's capping it's max CP a little bit and it's max HP.
The bottom 486cp Kabuto has 4 combinations and 3 of the 4 give it a 14/15 Stamina stat. The other is just 13. So this one will have higher HP but Kabutops max HP is only 106 anyways. It's attack is going to be 11 or 12 most likely with only 1 combination being a 10. Lower than the other ones.
They both have high defense chances for 14 or 15 out of 15 but mainly ATK and STA is what I worry about. I don't really know what DEF does besides raise and contribute to CP a little bit.
Rock type is strong vs Flying, Bug, Fire, and Ice (two common types are Flying and Ice, Fire semi-common because of Flareon and Magmar)
Rock is Weak against Fighting, Ground, Steel (not common attack types at all from what I've seen)
Rock is Resistant to Normal, Flying, Poison, and Fire (Normal and Flying are very common types right now for Gym Defenders so that's good that it's able to resist Snorlax and the like.)
Being Water type also means we get resistant vs Ice (aka Lapras etc)
I think Kabutops is set up to be a strong attacker in the current meta.
