Not only to conquer gyms but play altogether (unfortunately). No feeling of satisfaction by proving your strength over weakened pokemon. Don't even need to power existing pokemon, they are strong enough to smash weakened mons. Also, meagre rewards. Plus, motivation system to demotivate legit players. A disaster.
It seems like people have lost motivation to conquer gyms.
I went out there and kicked as many rival team members out of their gyms as I could, since they had already gathered several hours, most of them maximum. I hope they got their coins. But now there's nobody to kick me out. My Quagsire's looking kind of sad, all alone there...

Maybe they should have left the motivation meter as only something that will send mons back to their owners after they can no longer claim more coins. And the prestige thing should go down the more times you beat mons, like before, but instead they'd start with a full prestige. Berries could just increase prestige. And training at the gym could yield stardust.
Well, I'm guessing you are playing at deserted gyms. That was the problem from the beginning. The gym system did mean that people went for stagnated gyms. I live in a large city (2 million inhabitants) and here there is gym activity. Each player earning around 10-25 coin per gym after a couple of hours.
The best gyms are now the worst gyms.
No. When high level trainers take something down you can now tag along and dump whatever in gyms. With it only taking 10 minutes to start earning you could never fight anything and place enough to defend to improve your crew. Then you can be the hammer instead of the board.
Plus if you don't have a crew strong enough to take down the hilariously bad gyms out there now maybe you don't deserve coins. I could have taken down this trash at will one month in.
I seldom see lower level players getting in time to dump in anything. It's all lvl 33 or above.
In comparison my girlfriend is more casual player at lvl 25 compared to me at 35 as she started a lot later. She might be able to take down an 2900 CP Rhydon but if you are lacking a snorlax, dragonite tyranitar a blissey is to much pain in the ass to bother.
"You don't deserve coins" that examplifes the main mentality among high level players. Low level players need coins more than we do. That's why the main bulk of people have quit; it is a high level game and the grinding isn't worth it for the casual player.
The park is usually the most active, and it had only one gym, now it has 5. But now either people are waiting for mons to get their CP lower, or they don't even bother at all. I went to check my first 2 deployed mons, seems people overfed them. They'll probably reach 0 CP in 2 days, but most in there are still full, I doubt anyone's touching either of those gyms.
I only got kicked out of 2 gyms so far, but that was because I put lower mons like Ninetales and Starmie.
With Raids now live and the free coin maximum cut in half, gym battles are secondary for me. You honestly do not need more than 2 pokemon in a gym at a time, and you WANT them to be defeated to earn your coins. This is a disaster. Instead of shaving pokemon to get into a gym, you will now want to shave your own pokemon to get coins. Simply awful. With the ability to get free coins cut in half, and each raid battle requiring 100 coins, my interest in this game is becoming null and void.
And catching pokemon? Worthless, since lower tier pokemon server zero purpose at this time. This makes certain biomes even worse. It is not worth my time or effort to catch the shitty bug and grass types around me. I have an almost completed dex (unown). If new generations get released, I MAY come back to it. Outside of tracking down level 4 raids, there is absolutely nothing to be excited about in this game.
I'll admit I've lost a lot of motivation to gym battle anymore. Personally I just don't really like it. The main reason being the coin cap and being hour based. I used to be able to play for 2 hours and collect 60-100 coins a day. Now I've made a total of about 25 because of a high turnover rate in my area. Though I have a gym next to my house with my snorlax in it that has been there since they released gyms. At this rate, if there is only a 50 coin cap, what he if stays in long enough that would outweigh those 50coins? What if he is returned to me a day I've already collected "X" amount of coins? I guess I just lose coins in the long run for having a pokemon defend that gym for forever?
I'm also not a fan of not being able to attack your own gym. I liked the idea that I could go to a friendly gym, test out a pokemon I thought could have use, while helping the gym level at the same time. Sure I could always "test" on opposing gyms but then I feel like I would be wasting resources. Maybe I'm just too picky with this topic.
And then the motivation system that I'm "meh" about. I LOVE the variety, but hate that my 3k pokemon I want to show off deteriorate so fast. I also don't like that people can keep berrying pokemon as your attacking.
I realize it's still early and I have high hopes that somethings will get changed around, but it's also Niantic were speaking of.
They should have hybridized it with the old prestige thing.
- Gyms start with full prestige and 6 slots.
- The lower the prestige, the fewer slots, so the mons get kicked out in reverse order (first one remains leader).
- Prestige is increased based on how many mons were fed, and they should have a hunger meter. Restrictions: cannot feed mon during an attack.
- Motivation should be a separate thing. When a mon is out of motivation, it can be recalled home by the trainer. This way, no one will just wait until the whole gym gets emptied automatically. People could retract their mons at various times (after 8 hours or so have passed since defending) and their own team can no longer keep them hostage (They keep feeding my Typhlosion, darn it! Stop fattening him up, people!)
- Training at your own team's gyms should return. Reward should be stardust since people were missing that.
It's not a motivation to fight the same pokemon over and over again till it has 400 cp and faints. This is stupid. Many slots here were empty today. Only 1 or 2 mons in. Before the update the towers mostly were full of high cp mons and it was more satisfying to fight them. Why should I fight 5 times against 5 weak mons? Today only 1 of my mons came back. It lasted over 1 day in a gym, so easy 50 coins. Stardust is not needed anymore. Also high IV mons. Every crap stays in gyms now. Why should I power up a mon? It loses cp in gyms rapidly. The purpose of the game is gone with the gym rework. Strong mons are useless except in raids. I will change the movesets of my former high defenders into attackers and thats it. One raid gives you an evolved mon, no need to breed eggs anymore. It saves you the coins you formerly needed to evolve a mon. Saves you much time you formerly grinded mons for the candy. Niantic has destroyed the game. Give them some cash for raid passes and you get high IV evolved mons, universal candy, the TMs for the movesets you want and you are the winner. No need for incubators anymore.
Right. The curiosity is, we don't want to have mons for more than 10 hours in a gym. Feeding them? No. Why should we? A weak Pidgey or a Weedle can stay as long as a strong Blissey. But a Pidgey is a weak target for the other team and the possibility for getting it back soon is much higher. Otherwise our motivation to fight gyms is gone. Why give the other teams their coins? Let them stay in gyms forever with no coins for them. :-P Stupid system. Don't like it. I think Niantic has to clear gyms again in a few weeks because of stagnation. I never had 10 mons at once in gyms over 2 days. Most with 0 motivation now. They forget to give an incentive to fight gyms. Maybe extra 5 or 10 coins for breaking down a gym. This could change the situation.
