Isn't it better to place 3,000+ mon in gyms?
All these changes are creating more questions than answers. At first, it appeared advantageous to put < 3,000 CP mon in gyms, but after thinking about it, losing motivation faster (and therefore getting kicked out faster) may actually be a good thing as you can collect your max coins (50) after < 9 hours.
Also, why should you feed your mon? I thought it would be nice to feed my teammates' mon, but now I'm probably not doing them a favor as it would be best for all of us if our gym is taken down! Niantic, what were you thinking?!
Am I missing something here?

Being kicked out is a good thing because the trainer does not get coins unless the pokemon is kicked out.
A trainer cannot collect coins unless the pokemon is kicked out of the gym.
Holding several gyms is better but someone has to come along and kick out the trainers pokemon in order for that trainer to collect coins.
This is why higher CP defenders will get the trainer coins faster.
You can get 1 coin per each 10 minutes with a max of 50 coins per day no matter what. And you can only get those coins when your mon is kicked out, so that is the reason why probably is better to put 3k+CP mon now, because they drop cp a lot faster, almost 10 times faster than <3k ones, this way on around 9 hours it will be low enough to get kicked one in a single battle, he/she will have less than 1k CP and when defeated will come back to you with something between 40-50 coins.
You used to be able to collect up to 100 coins a day. This was changed today to a limit of 50 coins (along with the change to 1 coin per minute). As a result, the most you can earn per day is 50 coins, no matter how many mon return and how long they defended their gyms.
That is my current understanding - but someone correct me if I'm wrong.
I agree that it is probably better to put multiple 3k+CP mon now that you get a coin per ten minutes, this fixes the issue of the higher CP being almost useless.
A part from that, there is one reason to keep feeding your mon, and it is the chance of getting a candy for it. I won't bother feeding Vaporeon, Rhydon or Gyarados for example as they are common for me, but I will make sure I feed every Snorlax, Blissey, Tyranitar, Dragonite, Lapras or Ampharos I find for sure, despite being a low chance I have already got 1 Dratini candy yesterday for feeding my Dragonite so there is that.
Yes, you have to actually think good if you want to feed for the chance of getting the candy or leave it to be kicked out faster and get the coins.
What I am doing is as I have around 6-8 gyms I can go to my town I put Gyarados, Rhydon and Vaporeon on the ones that I think are going to last less, and Dragonite, Blissey, Snorlax on the others to keep feeding them as much as I can for the chance of getting a candy before they get kicked out.
This way I have get 50 coins yesterday and the Dratini candy, let's see how it goes today...
But you can also get a candy if you feed other people's mon, so you don't have to keep feeding your own (unless there are no other ones), but good point. If you can only get 50 coins/day, you might as well keep other mon in gyms for the opportunity to earn candy - I need to put my tyranitar in a gym tomorrow!
Yes, totally true, you can always feed other players ones, but depending on your area probably other players don't use mon you need candy for xD.
At least this is what is happening to me with Tyranitar, Lapras and Ampharos. Almost everyone uses Dragonite, Gyarados and Rhydon here but have seen almost close to none of the ones I need more, that's why I put mine and feed them in order to try to get the candy.
