If you could only have 1 Tyranitar...

Would you want one that is awesome at Attacking or a defensive gym beast?

attack.

Asking for a defending tyranitar is like asking if you would have blissey as an attacker.

I slaughter gyms with my Blissey as an attacker. 3,400 CP Dragonites are no match. You do not even have to dodge LOL

Imo there are only two decent defenders; blissey and snorlax.

There are plenty of good attackers (dragonite, tyranitar, alakazam, arcanine, Rhydon etc). I dont use Snorlax or blissey as an attacker since it is simply better to tie them up to gyms.

Same with Alakazam, you can use it as an defender but its way more useful to not tie it up to a gym an use it as an attacker.

Certain pokemons have certain functions. Defenders are not that many and is wasted beeing used as attackers.

An easy question to answer - I would want one awesome at attacking. Why? Because then I can battle with it. A defender? Story is always the same. You stick it in a gym, somebody else gets to fight it, and you get it back dead. What fun is that? Having a good defender is just a way to gather coins and dust, but not have much fun.

Well there is really only an offensive Tyranitar. Otherwise it's just a high CP low level defender that sucks at actual defense.

I value offensive > defensive movesets; any fighting mon is going to rough up Tyranitar, the moveset will not make a substantial difference when tyranitar is eating 1.95x damage from a STAB fighting attack. An offensive tyranitar will also sit higher than other mons in a gym, therefore adding defensive value in any offensive set

Any tryanitar should be an attacking one. A defensive one is as useless as a Rydon and Golem. Vaporeon food!
