I knew it
I have been reading everyone's opinions and early talk and I knew it. I knew Niantic would hardcore screw this up. Knew it would be a cash grab maneuver. 1 coin per hour, only 6 mons Max and they almost immediately drop motivation. They built a system that hurts real people who enjoy playing a game and continues to reward pricks who cheat, bot, and spoof. Nice job!!! Also, I was able to a couple of mons in gyms yesterday and no one lasted more than 25 minutes.

I think it varies a lot on your gym scene. Where I am (Singapore), I couldn't hold a gym for more than five minutes. Now I can hold it for about 30 min, but that is on the day where a lot of people are playing. I'm going to wait until it reaches the steady state and raids are on to make a conclusion.
I am reposting from another tread, as people are just posting the same complaints over and over:
Isn't it a little bit early to judge the system? Players have not even been able to play a full cycle, lest adapting to it. Only after 100 hours, in three more days, will players feel the effect of defenders stuck in stagnant gyms not generating any coins. Which will be especially nice if all the 20 defenders you are allowed to place are stuck. Only then they will realize that the days of holding gyms are over. Once that sets in, it does not make sense any more to compulsively take back any gym as soon as possible. After all, you want to encourage the other teams to tear it down eventually. And within a few days ripe targets will appear, where all defenders are down in motivation, and which can be taken over with minimum effort.
As for myself, I placed 7 defenders yesterday, about one hour after the start (late at night, pouring rain, thunderstorm). Of these, two came home within an hour, coinless. One more during the night, bringing single-digit coins. Two more came home this morning, bringing 10+ coins. One remains. [Edit: Se just came home. 12 coins.] Meanwhile, the five defenders I placed this morning on my way to work are all still out, clocking at over three hours for three coins each. Long story short, at least in my region the new system is working.
Exactly, I could claim 6-8 gyms daily even if I lost 5 during the night I go out and get some gyms back and still claim 6-8 gyms.
now to get the 100 coins you need to hold 20 gyms for 5 hours, or 10 gyms for 10 hours or 5 gyms for 20 but this all depends on when they come back! And this has to be done every single day, cashgrabbing lazy cheap *****!!
If you are on the low team in your area like I am you are screwed. Before I could get 4 gyms in half hour and get 40 coins a day. I don't have the time to go around and place mons in like 10 gyms at a time. I placed 2 this morning so we shall see what happens but I can't imagine it will be amazing unless someone feeds my mons.
My area is 23 gyms of one other team and 2 gyms split between the other two of which I am one. I have collected 30 or more coins since the gyms opened and have 3 mons still active with a combined 47 coins to give between them. I have never collected more than 30 coins a day with rare exceptions for my area. And to do so I had to solo 3 lv10 spoofer hell gyms. These deteriorated gyms are a joke to take down. This morning half of them had 2-3 mons that could be knocked out the first run.
Now, I'm not saying that you don't have some valid complaints especially for your area. And I may be in a similar situation in a week or less when the few members of my team fade back into the shadows. But at the same time when gyms are less active then it may be even easier to earn and hold. I think we can be patient and see how it all evens out in a more normal setting before deciding the whole thing is just a money grab that doesn't work at all.
