Hi guys!

I have a question. Why are people so happy when they get a pokemon with hyper beam, for example, Snorlax or Dragonite?

In my opinion, HB is overestimated. I mean I know it hits hard but it's easy to dodge.

For example, if you look at Snorlax's moveset, you'll find out that the best moveset (overall) is ZH/HP, since it's A grade (Atk/def).
It might have the highest DPS but it's like playing dodgeball with a beachball xD. Anyone can dodge it!

I understand A Grade when you attack Gyms, since Def Pokemons don't dodge, but I would not put it for def moveset..

Maybe dodging is not considered or do I miss anything else?

Thank you in advance

not really, every move is easy to dodge
so the difference between hyper beam, earthquake and body slam is the number of times the AI can perform the attack
in real time gym battle, even a skillful attacker can miss the dodge, it maybe a connection problem that slightly change the response time, it maybe the cpu overloaded, things like that happened all the time those grading only simulate in certain numbers, not everything

Because gym defending is pointless, and the only thing that matters when it comes to gym defending is CP and finding a gym in the least populated area rather than moveset. So most people only care about the best attacking moveset.

The difference in attack and defense movesets are USUALLY miniscule in the end. I'd rather have the attack moveset with one bar since you actually have to physically use them when attacking. I really dislike the triple bar attacks and such.

This way I can use them for both attacking and defending. If people want your gym they will take it, they won't think "oh that was too hard to dodge, I'm going home"

Also, many people do not dodge. Including me. I see the gym from house, pick my team, drive down the road, steam roll them while smoking a cigarette and finding something on the radio. Just shows how easy it is to beat gyms. Poor guys with their perfect movesets and bubblestrats. All for nothing.

Last time i attacked gym i tryed to dodge one body slam and i failed, so i didnt even bother to dodge rest of the body slams.

After that was fight vs snorlax with hyper beam and i dodge hyper beam succesfully, because it is very easy to dodge even for ppl who dont dodge attacks regularly.

I cant even remember time when i failed to dodge hyper beam.
It gives attacker so much time.

These charge moves dont matter much for professional dodgers.
But it does matter for certain type of players, like myself.

Thats why i say body slam definatly is better than hyper beam in defending.

Or let me put it this way:
Hyper Beam is easy to dodge even for "noobs", thats why it sucks.

sure, i prefer body slam as defensive move over the two others, but there are blind spots about hyper beam that hardly put on table

shorter dodge window may have a better timing to hit the attacker, but this don't apply on attackers that don't dodge or those who are really good at dodging

on the other hand, longer dodge window gives attacker more time on preparing, which ends up harder to hit, and here is the blind spot, will the attacker take the risk to attack during the dodge window or just sitting still, either both will benefit the defender

there are times when hyper beam is better than body slam, if the attacker is running low in hp, the power output of hyper beam is going to be a threat even it missed, its still 3 times the damage output compare to body slam, no question the pressure is on the attacker

speaking of power output, attacker will never feel the pressure when body slam isn't doing painful damage, it is not that much where the attacker can actually take those damage without big problem, and even worst against the attacker who can dodge properly

the effectiveness of hyper beam can be increase by putting it at a upper level in gyms, where the hp of the attacker starts to wear off

even though hyper beam is not the the ideal move for defense, its still have the advantage in some situation, which makes it not a bad move at all

"if the attacker is running low in hp, the power output of hyper beam is going to be a threat even it missed"

Thats the moment when missing dodge doesnt even matter anymore, the pokemon was alrdy gona die, now your snorlax just wasted 100 energy hyper beam on "dead" pokemon and i gladly continue battle with full hp pokemon and make my dodge right next time when it rlly matters.

Besides, i never seen any pokemon to use hyper beam 2 times in battle, usually they use it once and i dodge it and when they gona start use it second time they are alrdy dead.
(3 ignored body slams vs 1 dodged hyper beam)

But this is because i dont dodge regularly, like i told, i only dodge hyper beam and other bigger threats.
So i propably make more dmg than 24/7 dodgers.

and not to mention im soon level 32 and biggest snorlaxes i have seen are less than 2000cp in this area.
even my vaporeons are almost 2500cp.

thats why body slam ends up doing much dmg into my pokemons than hyper beam ones.

i dont have time to dodge all those body slams or water pulses from vaporeons, but i always have time to dodge hyper beam succesfully hahahaha

This.

Slam might be slightly better on defense but hyper beam is overall easily one of the best moves in the game. Miss your dodge and your dead, try to squeeze in an attack, you're dead.Definitely does not "suck". Icy wind sucks.

As an attacker, I prefer to go up against defenders with fast & weak charge moves. Those are controllable; I can remove my pokemon from the battle once it is close to fainting. With slow & strong attacks like hyper beam or solar beam, this is different. One moment, your pokemon is healthy, the next you miss a dodge and it is catatonic. When you try to wreck a level 10 gym you might run out of revives from this. Then your best matched attackers will be taken out for good, which is annoying.
