How many Tyranitars are enough?

I’m level 40 and enjoy soloing tier 3 raids and I’ve been walking Larvitars for 10 months and I’m sick of it. Originally, my goal was to have 6 Bite/Crunch Tyranitars to solo Gengar and Alakazam easily and be my Mewtwo team if I ever get an EX pass. I have 4 Tyranitars now, 3 with Bite/Crunch and one with Bite/Stone Edge. Is that enough or should I continue grinding for a fifth Tyranitar? Should I TM the Stone Edge one to Crunch since I have 9 double rock Golems already? I’d really love to switch to Ralts for my buddy, but I haven’t found an Alakazam raid in about 2 months, so I’ve never battled one with more than 2 Tyranitars.

EDIT: Tyranitar raids are not an option for me. I don't have a car, so I can't drive to wherever the few Tyranitar raids are and both times that I happened to be within walking distance of Tyranitar raids, I was not able to get anyone on Discord to join me.

Try to hook up with a raid group and do some Tyranitar raids. You get the evolved Ttar and 10 candy (or 20 if you're cheeky and use pinap berries). That will free up your buddy space for something else.

I have 24. Probably 3 or 4 natural ones. If you are level 40 you can beat it with two other very marginal helpers that have a few Machamps.

I should have mentioned in my original post that obtaining more via raids is not an option for me. I don't have a car, so I can't drive to wherever the few Tyranitar raids are and both times that I happened to be within walking distance of Tyranitar raids, I was not able to get anyone on Discord to join me. That's why tier 3 raids are my favorite, I don't have to hope that others show up.

Using pinaps on Tyranitar is sensible, not cheeky. It's not hard to catch once you get the timing of its attack animation down and learn to throw reliable curve greats/excellents on it. Sure, you will miss some you might have caught using razzes or golden razzes but overall you maximize candy gain by always going for pinaps until the last few balls.

I second your opinion. Tyranitar pretty easy to catch now, if one knows the lock-in trick. Pinaps all the way until a perfect or close to perfect specimen shows up. Sitting on 1300 candies atm. Catch rate: 62-50.

I’d say you’re good on the Ttars. I also have 4 that i use, 3 with Bite/Crunch and 1 with Stone edge. Doesnt hurt to keep the stone edge one.

Yeah man 3 or 4 maxed out ones is plenty. If you get to a mewtwo raid and don't have enough people to beat it with 6, then wtf is everyone else doing? Being that you have 6. I can guarantee you won't get past those unless the mewtwo has focus blast

I'm not sure you said which level your Tyranitars are, but 4 is plenty to take down any Gengar or Alakazam even if they're level 30. There's only one Alakazam moveset where 6 Tyranitar is the optimal team anyway. You might not be able to 4-man Mewtwo without 6 Tyras, but do you need to?

Long-term Tyranitar is the better mon to spend your effort on, but since you're sick of it, I'd go for the shorter term gain with Ralts for now. You can always keep walking Larvitar in the future if you feel like you need that 5th Tyranitar.

I assume Tyranitar raids are not an option for you, but if you could do them, you should. The candy piles up fast from those.

Why is Ralts only a "short-term" gain? It seems more useful in the long run to have variety on your team. The situations where you need your 5th or 6th TTar are very rare.

Because Gardevoir doesn't have the same kind of guaranteed supremacy in its type over generations as Tyranitar does. Togekiss is a very relevant contender for the best Fairy-type pokemon in the next generation and has a potential fairy type quick move, which Gardevoir can't learn unless something major changes. Gardevoir is a very relevant pokemon for now and I'm walking Ralts myself, but it might not be that valuable in a year. Tyranitar will be.

There are so many upcoming raid bosses against which Tyranitar is the top or top 3 counter that having 6 of them is preferable. Also if they ever make the mistake of giving it a rock-type quick move, you're going to want at least 3 with dark, 3 with rock movesets, probably more.

Just increased pokebox to 1500, so around 750

You will never get past the 3rd T-Tar when doing a solo Gengar or Alakazam anyway so don't worry about it. When I finally soloed Alakazam I used two Gengars and I think I had just started battling with my 3rd TTar when I beat him. I guess if you were facing Focus Blast you might get to a 4th, but 2 high level Bite/Crunch and a couple high level Gengars are the fastest. You only have to do 3000 HP of damage.

Depends on the moveset. Alakazam with C/SB or C/FS is the easiest to solo with 6 Tyranitars without dodging, but you will need 6 unless they are something like level 35 or higher on average. I find both movesets to be hard with Gengars in the team, as SB can fire unexpectedly and FS is very hard to dodge compared to the other charge moves. For C/FB, 3 Tyra is enough, at least if you dodge all with Gengars or the Tyras are maxed.
