How do people conquer Larvitar Quest

My wife got a Larvitar Quest today (sadly my account missed it as I was driving and couldn't go back). Encountered a Hitmonlee but failed on the last throw (too nervous).

So how do you guys conquer it? I kind of understand to find mons with really large box, like Ponyta, Onix, etc., but still cannot guarantee success every time.

An unintended bonus of Mewtwo being the T5 boss is it almost makes this research trivial for me. I can consistently whip excellent throws on the big purple cat. The only part that makes it hard is if he stays caught within the first two balls.

Always use normal pokeballs with no berries on the mons that are easy to get excellent with (ponyta, kanghskan etc) so you give them more chance to jump out. If you catch one with excellent then wait for another ponyta.

I got lucky with a wild haryama a few weeks back, other than that, hope, pray and use nanab berries.

I got mine last time with a research Entei. Those are great for this quest because they have large hitboxes, can't run, and are unlikely to be caught with a pokeball even with an excellent throw.

I just nanab'd it, and got it.

Like TheBiggestLeaf said, Mewtwo is surprisingly easy to hit excellents on.

The last Entei I tried this on it stayed in the ball after my first throw - no razz, Pokeball only, I might have even whiffed and landed outside the catch circle. It's like the game knows when you actively want something to break out.

Now that the Kanto event is over, keep an eye out for Wailmer - always the easiest one for me to land Excellent throws (curved or otherwise).

My strategy is to start with the common, small hit zone ones, like pudgy/natu/rattata/spearow/sentret, and once I get an excellent on one of those, then I go for the last two with pokemon with bigger hit boxes. The main problem is the three in a row, of course. Once I have two, I'll use nanab berries on the last one, to make sure it doesn't dodge/jump on me at the last second.

I stockpile my quest inventory with mons that are easier to get excellents. Anything more difficult I’ll catch as I complete the quest

Once I catch with a excellent throw in the wild, if there are no other good candidates nearby then I dip into my quest pool
