High standards for IVs

The comments in the question about the C/SoB Exeggutor really shocked me. It seems that many people only want Pokemon with 90%+ IVs, and consider 80-89% IVs "low". By that logic, I should trash my 77% IV DB/DC Dragonite!

My team of Dragonites are mostly sub-80% IV (with the exception of 96% DT/O), with a variety of movesets, but they have been serving me very well. My Tyranitars have better IVs (89-93), all have B/SE and 15 attack, but I still prefer my Dragonites for neutral generalist attackers.

FuNKyShO's videos have already proven that difference in IVs are minimal. Species and moveset are more important (though the latter isn't a problem with TMs now). I remember in one of his videos, a 20% IV Charizard with FS/OH out-performed a 100% Arcanine with FF/FT, despite the Arcanine being at higher level.

What IVs do you consider "high"?
Also, 2 quick polls below regarding IVs and attack IVs.

Which Dragonite would you choose? IVs are A/D/S, both are same level and have moveset DT/O.
1: 86% (15/12/12)
2: 93% (12/15/15)
Thumbs up for #1, thumbs down for #2.

Another poll:
Which Dratini would you evolve? IVs are A/D/S.
1: 91% (14/13/14), level 28
2: 95% (14/14/15), level 20
Thumbs up for #1, thumbs down for #2.

If I didn't have enough dratini: both. The 91% first because is high level no investment. In the future I would invest in the 95% but not in the 91%

I voted high IV (and contrary to my other answer) due to the fact that stardust can always be obtained and Dratini are readily available for me.

I had a similar dilemma with my dragon:
1. 50% lvl 30.
2. 95% lvl 20.
I went against the advice of most here on this site and evolved number 1. It's not the dust that is scarce for me, I make ~10k per day so 75k to power up is a little over a week, not a big deal. But it took me a year to get enough candy to evolve one and waiting another 6 month to have a usable dragon is too much if I can have one now.

I'm surprised by the number of "thumbs down" votes for both polls. I expected more people to vote "thumbs up" for the first poll, because #1 will reach DT's breakpoint at a lower level, and save 15k stardust.

Why? Currently pokemon CP dont matter. Only number of players in a raid. For the future I expect PvP and then bulk will be more important than the clock.

High is above 90. Good is above 82.
I will make exceptions though, I'm not hardcore focused on the 90 per cent.

e.g. my first Dragonite was 75% and I'm still fine with that.
I might power up a 78% Moltres because I just can't catch more of the f++ker. I will however never power up my 73% 10-10-13 Fs/OH Flareon because it's just worth nothing.

So in the end: Base stats very high: exceptions to high IV okay.

Why can't I see any comments here?

High IV have always been important to me. With recent introduction of TM and scarcity of stardust they get even more relevant. It's for a simple reason, optimization of resources. Stardust, candy, etc means a lot of time invested in the game. I invest my resources in the best possible mons because that way I won't have to start over again and waste a lot of time.
That's why all my pokedex are really high IV pokemon. I aim over 90% even for a weedle ;)

Same here. Missing a few entries to my Dex currently due to not having the right IV to evolve. Have the candies though. Not gonna waste my time to invest in something sub par when I can just patiently wait it out until I get the right IV. That's double the work and time that could've been used towards my next great IV goal.

If given the choice of high IV or low IV with all other things nearly equal I'll choose high IV of course.

For rounding reasons I'll get a little picky with attack IVs if I have to spend.

Many of my mons have high IVs but when everything was based on hatches/candy it was pretty easy to be a little picky for me. I don't hatch as much now though.

I don't know how to vote. I have and will power up something with subpar IVs especially if it is at a good level. I'm far more concerned with dust than IVs but I do check them

As the OP from c/sob egg thread allow me to elaborate.

Stardust is hard to come by. For that reason I'm fairly selective in what I power up. If the stats are high enough I would invest in lower tier 'useless' mons.

I'm level 37 right now and I'm there because of all the double events. Even so I only have a dozen maxed out mons. My others add simply high level wild finds. Many have great IVS however there are some 65%s mixed in. I would not invest dust in my 65% Tyranitar or Machamp. Wham you find their basic forms in the wild you'd be hard pressed not to evolve them when they're already 30.

I know its been said that species and moves are more important that stats. Powering up an 80something though feels like I'm breaking one of my own rules.

I powered up my 86% IV C/SoB Egg to level 34 (breakpoint) a few months ago, he has been serving me very well as he is.
You should go for it, if he is your only one with that moveset. Having a legacy move is the most important part, 84% IVs are very good (though not the best). The difference in battle performance with a 100% one will be minimal (maybe 1%).

I started caring about higher IV when I wanted to maximize CP to sit just a little higher on the old gym towers. I'm at 550 storage and not adding spaces until I see a more direct point to this game. A current example: I'll throw away a lower IV 1300 Hypno caught Halloween, but keep an evolved/hatched 1154cp one with higher IV. Not sure the real purpose of either. However, my best Eggy is 2556cp level 33.5 C/SoB 71% 14a/12/6. It was the highest one that had the most damaging moves. If I hatched a 100%, I might try to bring one up--but other than that, fine with this one

Pokemon Go is now more of a collectors game so collecting high/extreme IVs is part of the end game now...

Sorta like collecting comic books or what not, getting that perfect 10 Gem Mint item is like getting the 100IV .

Once you do that, you're sorta "done" with that mon and can move on to others (like I have and powered up a 97% Jolteon and to me, I'm sorta "done" with needing another maxed Jolteon).

We all know IVs make very little difference in actual combat, but there is only so much to do in the game and needing 100% IV mons isn't needed so this is one of those things that we/me have as a goal to keep interested.

What is funny is casuals on Fb boasting about their 98 or 100 IV legendaries but have literally no dust can't even afford one or two powerups. IVs are overrated, it's more about how must dust you have.

No, it's about ALL of it! IVs, dust, candies, battles...

EVERYTHING!!!

I prefer IVs over 90% myself. Before the gym rework when you had to prestige , you can tell who didn't care for IVs when powering up their Pomemon. I have a few entrys in my Dex I'm missing solely because I haven't found a good enough IV to evolve and fill it in.
On the prestiging note, Pokemon with poor IVs were defeated faster than than say if I had to prestige against my own. Same Pokemon and moveset. You should already have a general idea of how much damage a special move should do per MU (match up).
So many times my special would do twice the normal damage compared to the damage dealt to one of my Pokemon's of the same specie, and moveset.
Another factor is the investment. Stardust and candies are hard to come by for some species.
Do you want to invest in more potions and revives to maintain your poor IV Pokemon or do you want to spend less and have your great IV Pokemon last longer and is more budget friendly?

Here's an analogy for you: Do you want to invest in an older model car that has a carburetor and only gets 12 miles to the gallon but requires lots of maintenance to keep it in the road or would you rather invest in a newer model that's fuel injected , gets 20+ miles to the galllon and doesn't need any repairs until a few years down the road?

You are exaggerating the difference between high and low IVs!
The difference is much, much smaller than you described it as.

Up

Not really. Close combat just by visualization takes about 1/10 of the total health bar by a great IV attacker towards a great IV Snorlax. Seen it do like 2.5 more than that on poor IV Snorlax'.
But do what y'all want and keep investing in poor IVs. I'll wait til PvP comes out and smack all of y'all while being potion efficient but the numbers never lie. 5%, 8% or whatever. If I'm going to pay "invest" in something, I'd like my money's worth. Mirror match someone with the same moveset and Pokemon with better IVs than yours and you'll soon find out those percentages make a difference and that your lower Pokemon don't really compete with the better IV one.

The difference in damage for a Mon with 15 def compared to 0 def would be around 10%, the same goes for HP so at Max you could see around 20% difference.
The analogy is also flawed, obviously if you can afford both cars go for the better one, but what if you have to save for another year in order to buy the better car and use public transportation in the meantime?

Then you're still spending more in the long run. Same like in some places, the cost of rent for an apartment is sometimes more than the cost of a mortgage. At least with the mortgage it's better in the long run because you it will be yours after investing in it unlike spending the same amount of time in an apartment that will never be yours . All Pokemon in PoGo cost the same amount of stardust and candy to power up. It's just on you to decide if you want a house or an apartment.

It is much more likely to find a high level average IV Mon than a high level high IV one so the investment is usually not the same. Also, a Pokemon is a resource by itself, a crappy IV dragonite can help me earn coins at gyms, take down rival gyms and fight in raids while you wait for your perfect dratini.

I spent a lot of dust and candies powering up these 2 "low" IV legacy moveset Pokemon, after their moves became legacy.
1: 77% (10/15/10) Dragonite DB/DC
2: 60% (07/13/07) Snorlax ZH/BS

The game is partly about collecting. Since high IV is more rare, it is more valued. I doubt there are many times when a few points difference in IV would change the outcome of a battle.
Personally, I select the highest IV mon that I can get, but there is no hard limit. For example, I invested quite a bit in a couple of ~60% IV blisseys, because the Valentine's event gave me a couple high level chansey, but no high IV chansey. Blisseys were super cool at the time. So, I worked with what I had.
I do have a few perfect mon, that get special treatment for being perfect, but I haven't noticed a significant effect on the game play. Its more for showing off, or just enjoying something for being rare.

If people want to have IV standards...let them. How does it affect you?

We know the difference isnt huge, but some like the element of the game, which is grinding for a strong IV version of either their favourite pokemon, or things that have a strong use in the meta.

I know personally that if my goal on this game was to just get a 70% IV version of whatever i wanted, then i would probably have lost most motivation to play along time ago.

Also nobody is suggesting you trash anything, especially not a dragonite.

When it comes down to it, investing allot of resources into a pokemon is a big deal considering dust costs and how rare certain candy can be.

So it makes total sense people dont want to dump all their resources on the first 70ish% pokemon they have, when they could get a better version in their next egg hatch

I don't think there's a right or wrong answer to this. It just depends on where you are in the game. In the old meta, if I had waited around for perfect or near perfect IVs then I never would've gotten into the Gym system. So I powered up a bunch of mid-80s Mons to place in gyms. Those guys brought in 5000 dust a day for 4 months (started playing at Xmas). Now that I have a pretty solid army, I can be more selective. With 35,000 less dust a week I have to be. But in the mean time I've built up a queue of 95+ mons that either were low level or had bad movesets that I am bringing up to snuff while culling my old prestigers.

Up

You shouldn't trash anything that's already powered up, but considering how easy it is to get quality Pokemon from raids, and how stardust is slightly harder to come by because defending gyms doesn't give any, and because moveset can be altered in the future while IVs cannot, it seems high level players don't have much to do besides being very picky with IVs.

If I powered up every raid boss I caught that had the highest appraisal for total IVs, I'd be out of dust in like 2 week after raids were introduced.

If you're in an area where raids are common and you can gather enough people for them, it's most likely easier to get 5 of a fully evolved Pokemon from a raid than it is to get the dust to power up a single Pokemon from level 20 to 30.

So if you've got many options on what to power up but not enough dust to power up everything, it would make sense to be very selective and only power up the best of the best.

For IVs I would prioritise attack against raid bosses, because in some cases there is a difference in damage dealt by your quick move due to IVs, and that damage does add up.

Under the old gym system I would prioritise stamina slightly more than attack and defence the least, because regular Pokemon in gyms do less damage and you can afford to dodge, where that small bit of HP does make a difference because of how small damage numbers are.

But in raids, time is everything, so having the most damage done is what matters and since dodging wastes too much time - unless it allows you to get another charge move off - having extra HP or defence won't make a difference, the boss is probably going to overkill you anyway.

Powering up this 66% gyarados (CP 2731) was one of my first priorities when I finally got the candy. Taken him to ~410/1484 battles (1018 battles, 466 training), and he's definitely one of my favorite mons to use.. still waiting on dragonite.
My level-29+ squad is full of 66% range IV mons. As long as it's level 29+, I'm evolving it. If the Atk IV is >= 10 and base stats, type, and moveset are acceptable or I grinded hard for the candy, it's getting powered up. For "supreme" mons and/or movesets I disregard IVs almost completely, if its level 24+ I'm considering power up investment, if it's 27+ I'm definitely powering up to 30.
I recently (and somewhat reluctantly) stopped caring about "high" IVs and switched my motivation to acquiring a nice level-30 squad. Now that IVs are the only static factor in the pogo meta, 100% IVs is obviously the most attractive feature to have on a mon. But, now that we have raids, having a dope level-30 squad is pretty crucial too. With the dust scarcity, acquiring mons already at level 27+ to evolve and/or power up has become a priority for me.
