Hidden Power v Water Gun

I evolved a Starmie with double water moves, only it has Hidden Power (Water) and Hydro Pump. How would it compare in battle with a more typical WG/HP variation? In terms of damage and energy generation?

Water Gun wins.

Thanks. Does WG just win due to ease of dodging? Because it looks like HP=3*WG in terms of damage, energy and time.

Yes, and also due to Floor() +1 from damage formula; chances are in a lot of cases 3 wg will deal 1 or 2 mire damage than a hidden power.

If there will ever be a reason to put Starmie in gyms and the mechanics is still the same it would be interesting.

That must be why I stubbornly keep my Hidden Power (Psychic) / Hydro Pump starmie in my inventory. Gym rework, please be good!

The flooring issue decides which is better.

After the calculation, any fractional damage is rounded down (floor) to the nearest whole number, then +1 (so an attack always does at least 1 damage).

So while Hidden Power's numbers are all exactly 3x the numbers of Water Gun, three uses of Water Gun can deal a smidge more damage because of the floor+1 calculations.

Thanks guys! I'll try out the Hidden Power one for prestiging anyway, as its in the right CP range to smash a Rhydon or two.
