Is Heatran Really That Great?
In GamePress's article, "Heatran and Its Place in the Meta," they called Heatran "arguably the greatest Fire-type in the game." They make it sound as if Heatran can compete with the likes of Moltres and Entei due to its high bulk and high resistances. However, Fire Blast is just terrible, although Fire Spin is nice. So, my question is, should I be going after Heatran candies more aggressively? I've been holding off on Heatran raids because I figured it was just another legendary dex filler, at least until it gets a special signature move. I guess it might be worth saving up those candies for the time when it DOES get a better fire charge move. Thoughts?

Heatran may not be the best it can be at the moment, I'm certain it will definitely be the best fire type pokemon in the future. It doesn't even need Magma Storm to be good just Overheat, which Niantic has decided against.
Of course you should be going after those raids. The double candy ends today/tomorrow right? I'd advise against investing it Heatran for now, but absolutely stock up on those candies as it's guaranteed to return with a better moveset to surpass Moltres and Entei.
Like everyone said, he does have the best TDO of all fire types and he is fairly good on PVP, jut not with fire blast as one of his charged moves. Should niantic have given him overheat, he would have been the best in TDO and DPS.
I think it is a good idea to keep going on his raids not just for his candies but also for rare candies. Nowadays, you can unlock a second charge move for all pokemons and according to a list that was made here in gamepress, some regular pokemons become better with a second skill and some legendaries become monsters or jacks of all trades (like Groudon, Mewtwo, Lugia and even Latios). For the legendaries, you won't have their raids for some time.
So go on and wreck those Heatrans :3
I dont think heatran needs to worry about legendaries with double moves for now, most haven't gotten to a position where they are comfortable with giving multiple legendaries 2 charge moves in my experience. The limiting factor tends to be candy, as most players ive met have 300+ RC banked, between power ups and the second moves, it drains that very fast. In the future, I have a feeling it will be more common to see dual move legendaries, but for right now, most seem to only have one, maybe 2 if they had a lot of mewtwo candy from that month
In the raid scene, Heatran's DPS falls behind Moltres, Entei, and even Flareon. So unless it gets better moves in the future, it won't be winning any DPS contests in that realm.
However, it's defense stat plus the plethora of resistances it gets due to typing make it the bulkiest fire-type by a good margin. That could make it useful in gym battles if you're looking to conserve potions.
It's greatest potential, however, may lie in PvP, as the article suggests. Most of our other fire-type big hitters severely lack in move variety or any meaningful kind of counter coverage. Heatran has a mixed bag of moves, which could be used to its advantage here. I'll be curious to see how it performance with bug bite, simply because the EPS on that move is quite good.
Thanks, this is the answer I was looking for. Do you think it would be a good idea to use Heatran instead of Moltres or Entei when trying to solo a T3 or duo a T4? I'm just thinking that his bulk/survivability might help in that kind of situation. DPS is king when in a big raid group, obviously, because you want those damage balls. But in a solo or very small group situation, you don't want your Pokemon fainting too quickly. TDO I think would be the most useful trait there. Thoughts on that aspect?
I just got my 2nd boosted lucky. 15a/12/13 and today got 15a/15/13. Collect boosted ones and trade them would be my advice. Easy to beat so a lot of people will have them to offer to you.
FYI, Heatran absolutely owns Melmetal, it is like The Beatles vs. The Monkees. Somebody went thru a lot of trouble to show off their prize...one of the easiest takedowns in the whole game, boosted Heatran w/ fire Blast has that niche at least.
