would a reasonable challenge to gyms include just limiting the number of attackers based on trainer level?

under 30: can use 6.
L30-31: limited to 5 attackers
L32-33: limited to 4
L34-35: limited to 3
L36+: limited to 2 attackers

I don't know. I just figured a forced challenge is at least some challenge. Obviously Niantic wants the game to be easy for players under L30. So this would not hurt beginners, and would actually help them by giving them a better chance to hold a gym.

(I realize in most cases this still would not present much of a challenge. But I figured it was at least something.)

That could be viewed as a disincentive to level up, similar to when people wanted to keep their pokemon at CP 2999 or below, because CP 3000+ mons lost motivation faster.

They could offer some sort of incentive for defeating defenders with an attacker of lower CP (similar to the prestiging concept), such as a nominal amount of stardust or something. For example, if a defending Rhydon has a remaining (motivation-adjusted) CP of 600, and you defeat it with, say, a Poliwag or Bellsprout with a lower CP, you get 50 stardust. They could even scale it up so you get 100 stardust if your attacker has half the CP of the defender. Or, instead of stardust, they could make it an XP bonus, which would benefit lower level players more. This would bring back the idea of prestiging, which gave a use to those mid-level mons that no longer have much purpose.

Or maybe just allow 6 different species to attack or a 1 to 1 ratio if the gym isn't full. Since you can't place the same species to defend, why should we be allowed to attack like that?

They really need to have more than one kind of gym. one for the babies and one for the grown ups!
