So if you haven't heard it was announced that the next major update to Pokemon go will include a re-haul of the gym system. I assume we can expect it in a few months.

So my question is do you think it is worth not spending any stardust until this update comes?

For example what if I powered up a Dragonite now as a high CP defender but then after the update CP is no longer important for gym placement. Or what if it resulted in another change in best move sets.

Thanks all for replies :)

I'm really curious to see what happens. Battling gyms is a big part of why I like Pogo. I sure hope they don't ruin it.

I have a massive gym defense and prestige team that I already invested a TON of stardust in. I'm currently in 18 gyms. Usually have about 20 or so at a time.

I'm a gym junkie.

Mystic. I know I know what you guys are thinking. But in my city Mystic was actually the least played until about 2-3 months ago and now we are about even with the other 2 teams.

The City is split up and each team is fairly well represented all holding a good number of gyms. Lots of movement too. I lost about 10 gyms on the weekend and slowly been getting them back.

Prior to Christmas I was lucky to get 5 gyms and I would usually be happy with 3 for my coins. Things flip quite a bit here. But each team has figured out its "area" with some key battles in the middle.

Sounds like POGO turf wars! Do you all wear colors? Bandanas?
Does it take at least 5 of you to cross the street to hit a yellow gym?

Same here, the major city I'm living in the suburbs of is all red and yellow (I say "ketchup and mustard" when I'm downtown and annoyed seeing it lol) but I've worked hard to keep my neighborhood I actually live in blue. I don't get all the "mystic is everywhere" talk when it's Valor the most common, then instinct and mystic is the least, at least for my city anyways

I'm not going to wait. I'm thinking that it will come midway through gen 2, so if I wait for that I might as well wait for the release of gen 3, since there could be major changes there too. I don't want to go through an entire generation not improving my mons because there could be changes.

This is generally my strategy too. If I evolve a good mon with a great defensive moveset I almost always have to max him out. I usually take them past level 30 too. I got dust so lets spend it.

The only thing I can do is holding off right now on evolutions so I don't have the urge to power them up. I'm currently "saving my candies". And I guess saving my dust in the mean time.

Personally, I am not spending dust on anything. The only thing I have spent dust on since the update is Blissey which I powered up as far as I could with my limited candies. I have an 87 IV Larvitar and 89 IV Flaafy ready to go up to final evolution but I will not do it until I see this overhaul play out. I am not hurting for attackers or defenders and while they would be cool to have, maxing out a T-rex is going to eat up most of my dust (I only have around 160K). My advice is use this time to catch as much as you can, load up on dust, and be snobby about anything under 90% IV. Why not? If you are over level 28 you probably have a decent crew of attackers and defenders and Gen 2 is filled with fantastic single/no evolution prestigers that you can catch around the 1000 cp mark and never invest in.

CP is the most important thing in the current gym system.
If you already have enough high CP mons (which should be equal to your avarage daily gyms holded), don't spend any more candy/stardust powering them. Moves or defense abbility doesn't matter, just look at the CP.

My approach right now is to only spend stardust on Mons I will use immediately and frequently. So I would only suggest powering up a Dragonite now if it would be your go-to high CP defender. Basically I think it's best to focus on getting immediate value out of your spent dust. The main goal is to avoid spending a bunch of dust and candies on a backup defender or attacker that gets nerfed into obscurity without ever getting used.

As many have stated before, a simple improvement of the gym meta would be to only allow one of each species in each gym. Would force players to diversify some. Would also benefit those who actually bother to take the gym down as they get to make the first pick.

I really like this idea. If someone has a Dragonite in a gym no one else can put one in. Snorlax in a gym, can't have another... etc.

It would give the gyms a very unique look and actually be hard to take down because you would have to always switch up the best "effective" attacker.

Yeah, I like it a lot too. Would probably force a lot of us into powering up mon that aren't the absolute top-tier defenders. Should be fun. All I see in gyms are combinations of Vaporeon, Snorlax, Blissey, Dragonite, Gyarados and Rhydon. Sometimes a low-level player has put in a low cp mon at the bottom, but gyms are taken over constantly anyways. Haven't seen a Tyranitar in my small town of 4 gyms yet.

I don't know if I'd really like this idea...For higher level players, they already "wasted" their dust on the common 5-6 defenders and if they made this change, they would have limited dust to use compared to lower level folks...

Also, multi-accounters could flood a gym and put mons in there and near everyone else would be locked out...

I see a guy playing 3 accounts and if, say he puts a Dragonite, Rhydon, Snorlax, by the time you get to a gym at say level 7-9, there is nothing left for you to put.

This also doesn't solve the problem of big 6 defenders, and will now be big 9 defenders...

It'll be same 9, just different ones and if CP is in the rankings, then you can just resort by CP again.

I don't have a single Dragonite, but woe to the people who spent 600k dust powering up 6...

I generally try to diversify, but this would be bad for most people I'd guess, even for people who agree now since you may have nothing to put in the gym if someone already has one species there.

(and I'm still sitting on near 700k dust, but still don't like such a drastic change as this).

I saw someone say they were holding 21 gyms, I had always thought you could only get rewards for 10 gyms, so I never pushed it past that. So why hold more than 10 gyms?

Use them as a safety buffer so if you lose some you can have time to claim more without losing the 100 coin bonus.

And then there are those os us who only really have access to 4 gyms. And my town isn't even that small, some have it a lot worse than me!

I live in a big city and currently holding 20 gyms. This morning I had 22. When I get down to 15 gyms I make my gym runs. I need this buffer to guarantee the coins from 10 gyms because I need to feed my incubator addiction.

Think about this, Niantic have done everything with only one thing in mind $$$. so... All of the ideas have to be in the way that we need to invest real money to progress; and i dont mean pay to win; but since stardust is the hardest resource to get and only needed for gym an CP is only related to dust (in terms of powering) i think is still going to be the base pilar, ergo is dificult CP wont be important for gym placement.
Don´t forget Niantic may introduce in any moment another currency (wouldn't be the first company to do it) and maybe along with stardust do something different.

my 2 cents

i predict that whatever they chose will screw over regional players who are resource poor esp if you are in a minor team for your area (my area is almost all valor including our regional king spoofer if I want a gym i usually have to pull it down from level 4-7 and it may go up to level 3 mystic (usually the two extra slots filed by level 20-25 players) before getting taken back it drains your potions fast. As a side note it makes the new tear lists a bit BS as they don't seem to take into account potion efficency.
