Answers

If it stopped a gym attack attempt. So someone from another team attacked that gym, and either had all their Pokemon fainted against that Pidgeot, or decided to flee from it.

Can someone confirm that "flee" adds to this number? It seems like if someone attacked and immediately fled it shouldn't add to the count. Does a certain amount of time need to pass, or a certain number of pokemon lost before it will count?
