Gotta evolve a karp… so which one?

Just finished the 10 raid battles in Mew quest, so it's time to evolve a Magikarp so I can move on. Seeing as the best IV is lower level, should I just save myself some dust and go for the biggest one?

L A/D/S
183CP - L35 14/10-11/7-8 [EDITED TO CORRECT LEVEL]
170 CP - L30 15/9/7 [EDITED TO CORRECT CP]
154 CP - L26 13/15/14
57 CP - L15-16 0-2/15/1 (It's shiny, haha)

My current Gary roster, in case that influences the choice:
RW Fassbinder: WF/HP L38 14/15/13 3159CP
Werner Herzog: B/DP L35.5 15/14/13 3048CP
Wim Wenders: DT/HP L29 15/7/13 2652CP

Thanks!

...you have a ~71% Magikarp powered up to level 38? But why?

Weather boost goes up to level 35 so that means it was powered up, I guess you could say "saving dust" in the sense that it was already spent?

Oops — I mistyped. It's level 35. I probably typed 38 because of the 8000 stardust to power-up. Sorry about that.

the point is that there's no benefit to power up a pokemon before evolving it, should you decide in the end to not evolve it then you've wasted stardust on it.

That's a point I agree with (an even more important one back before the days of TMs) — it was a typo, now corrected. Cheers!

with kyogre existing you're probably not going to want to power up any gyarados, so just evolve the highest level one as it'll be the most useful in battle should you ever need to use it.

even if you don't have a kyogre, it will most likely return in the future seeing as previous raid bosses have returned.

to put it into perspective, something like a level 27 kyogre is on par with a maxed gyarados, so if you do have one but don't consider it's IVs good enough, in my opinion any kyogre is still worth powering over a gyarados to save yourself a good amount of stardust in exchange for rare candies.

Thanks for the tip — that's the direction I was leaning, especially since my best IV one has the worst attack stat. The one advantage of powering up a Gyarados is that with the 1km buddy walk, it's a lot easier than blowing rare candy. However, maxing them out takes A LOT of stardust, so probably best to evolve that L35.

Level 20 to 27 is only 42 candies, personally I find 42 candies much easier to acquire than ~180k dust, the dust you'll need to power up from 27 to 40, hence my stance.

More like Kyogre exists so why power Gyarados when you could put an equal amount of dust into Kyogre and get better returns, in the same way that a Salamence is outclassed by Rayquaza.

There's nothing wrong with using Gyarados but why put dust into one when there's a better alternative. Keep making stuff up though.

I would only ever evolve a 400 candy cost Pokémon if it had superb IVs. The L26 Magikarp for sure. L26 ain’t bad, and if it is an afterthought to Kyogre then its level should be no problem

Also, CP1770 Magikarp (@-@)

Or if you want a freaking Mew and you’re not willing to wait to see if the special research disappears. I already have a lvl39 100% Gyarados, but for sure I’ll evolve my shittier Magikarp to get over the roadblock at stage 6.

Well, if Karps came easy, and considering the Gyarados I already have, I’d probably just f*ck it. They aren’t really commonplace for me anymore though :/ Fortunately I had one with the same IVs as OP’s L26, but L23

Evolve the shiny! You already have more high level Gyarados than you will ever need/use.

I literally just caught a CP 141 Shiny Karp with bad IV's. That's the one I'll be evolving in two months after I walk enough candy for it

As a general rule, the harder it is to get the candy to evolve, the more important IVs are. With Gary taking 400 candy, you should go with the high IV, unless you are getting 3 Karp spawns every 30m or something crazy like that.
