Golem with Ancient Power

No, you can use it to defend gyms and prestige it.

I have one 100% ivs RT-AP and never powered it up. Maybe Ancient Power can perform like Water Pulse for defense.

I would consider ancient power annoying, simply because you have to dodge more than once in your battle if you don't want to get hit. I've faced it a few times in gyms. I'd rather take on a Vape with Hydro Pump myself, because its easy to dodge.

Maybe you should try...
I have (2) Golems with Good IV...
(A) MS+EQ (Ground spammer)
(B) RT+SE (Rock spammer)
I both Powered them till 30... I did not regret it..
(A) one of my attacker (not for water type)
(B) also an attacker Specially for Dragonite...
They both just fine...

As a defender, Golem is mediocre at best anyway because of weakness to water and how many Vapes are around.

I've fought Golems with Ancient Power and I don't dodge. I can take it down with a high CP Vape with not that much damage, in about 20 seconds...

The battles with Stone Edge or EQ last a bit longer because I dodge them to avoid major damage. But I just have to dodge 1 and then it's game over for Golem.
