Glass cannon attackers (Alakazam and Gengar)

My key attackers are Conf/Solar Exeggutors, WG/HP Vaporeons, double-ice Cloyster and Jynx, double-fire Charizard and Arcanine, TS/Thu Jolteons, Count/DP Machamp and VW/PB Venusaur.

Current (realistic) goals are DT/OR (or DT/Hurr) Dragonite and RS/DP Poliwrath. My only Lapras has WG/IB (doubt I will ever get another) and I have yet to catch or hatch a Larvitar.

I have a Gengar with SC/SB (non-wonder). My only Alakazam has PC/DG but I have three wonder Abras; just need candy. Current stardust count is 150k.

Is it worth powering up Gengar or farming Abra candy to try for a better moveset? What matchups would glass cannons be useful for? My dodging skills are mediocre (and I aim to improve).

Personally I prefer Alakazam over Gengar.
He has better matchups, and better moves to get SE on more relevant defenders than Gengar has.

Fs or Fb both work well on Blissey/Snorlax, and he resists their psychic moves.
Of course he is a sacrifice DPS but he can make short work of taking down a big Blissey, if you have something else to clean up once he faints - and can ensure you make it thorugh without the clock beating you.

For me...Alakazam all the way.

But focus blast is a bad move is it not? It takes months to get enough abra candies, my first got pc dazzling gleam wich dissapoints, my second just now got pc fb what level would you recommend before it can get real use?

Focus Blast hits SE into Snorlax and Blissey, so that makes up for the lack of STAB...and it has a bigger base hit than any other charge move for Alakazam.
For attacking into Snorlax/Blissey it is my fav of all of his moves.
The rankings are decieving.

Even dondon used Fb as a moveset to take down Blissey and Snorlax in his 'Besting' pages.

I like mine at lvl30, but anything over lvl25 will be useful...of course the higher the level the better.

I might just be lucky in that I have an Abra rich area, and I have had a lot of practice using him....but I am still hunting a Pc/Fb, so I make do with my C/Fb

I'm not wasting too much stardust on glass cannons. You have to be really good at dodging (and not constantly alficted with the dodge bug), and then you only really gain a few seconds off a sturdier attacker that has a type advantage. If you have trouble beating Blissey in time, I suppose that would be the biggest reason to try.

The main attacker I see missing from your list is Gyarados with Bite/Hydro Pump or Bite/Outrage. I have found myself using my "dud" B/O Gyarados a lot more often against enemy Dragonites. (All of my own Dragonites have Steel Wing, and it takes "too long" to scroll down to my Lapras.)

If you do any gym fighting with other players, then you should also try for a few multi-bar charge moves. I really like Vaporeon with Aqua Tail (three close to maxed because I put them in gyms also) and Jolteon with Thunderbolt.

I powered up a Gengar and use it in specific instances, such as when I need an early-gym sweeper against lower CP defenders. With proper dodging, my SC/SBomb Gengar can take out three or four sub-2300 defenders, then go all out on a tough case before fainting. Then a Revive and a Super Potion later, he's back up. I don't often pull it out at all against the heavier hitters.

Should you power up yours? From a game-economics standpoint, I'd suggest you don't, as a glass cannon is situational and there are better all-around alternatives that will give you a bigger return on your investment. If you really like one or the other, then go for it. This game should be fun.

I like the 'mons so I use them. They'll be more useful once the dodge bug is gone. And if someone doesn't believe it'll ever happen, remember what Alakazam and Gengar were like in the very beginning. Back then I only gathered Abras 'cos I like this evolution line. My first Zam had pathetic 700+ CP and even more pathetic DG. Now it's a prestiger I don't really use, lol.

I have 95.6% gengar with SC/Sludgebomb and 95.6% Alakazam with PC/FB. They are very satisfying attackers against Snorlax and Blissey. Their fast attack just makes your adrenaline flowing. You have to dodge but hey, it should be fun practicing gym battle, right? That's also part of the game.
