Is Giratina Altered form a prelude to Giratina Origin form?
I have read a few posts on this site to the effect that Giratina Altered form is a pathetic attacker and basically trashing that pokemon. But isn't Giratina Altered just a prelude to Giratina Origin form? I think Niantic released the altered form first for good reason. Yes, it is pathetic as an attacker, but capturing it generates candies that can be used on the Origin form. And the Origin form might be pretty good. If the Origin form had been made available as a raid boss first, I think it likely that fewer players would have been interested in raiding the Altered form when it became available, so Niantic released the Altered form first. Makes sense to me. What do you think?

This is entirely possible, as people likely would have been much less interested in Giratina's altered form if origin form came first. That said, if origin form Giratina has the exact same moves that altered form does, it's not going to generate that much more interest either, as it will still be highly outclassed in both the dragon and ghost departments.

Either way, yeah sort of. Giratina-O didn't even exist in the main series until Platinum, the third installment of Gen 4 that's basically an upgrade to Diamond and Pearl. Your point about the candies is why I made attempts to raid a good number of them during the Halloween event. If Castform is an indicator then both formes will use the same candy.
It's been pointed out that the announcement regarding Giratina never specified "Altered" forme in the way that the Deoxys announcement specified Normal forme. It's possible Giratina-O could be introduced during the month, but we'll see. Like other people above have said Origin forme will need its moves revisited to generate any interest. Without Shadow Ball it's pretty much dead on arrival.
