Gengar with shadow ball

I just evolved a 14/14/12 IV's Gengar with shadow claw and shadow ball as moveset and am thinking about powering it up and intend to use it as my attacker not defender

I know that slude bomb deals more DPS then shadow ball but does it really worth trying to evolve another Gengar in order to get that moveset?

How weak does shadow ball Gengar compare to a slude bomb Gengar if once must compare?

It is extremely hard to get any gastly in my city as they don't have nest they just appear randomly all over the city

Keep this Gengar but DON'T power it up. Sludge Bomb is a much better offensive move IMO (Faster, more damage). I personally can't use any of the 3+ bar moves because of how slow they are. Yes, you can use them more frequently, but Gengar is a very frail pokemon. If you get stuck on a Shadow Ball while the enemy is preparing a strong charge move, you will probably not dodge in time and faint. If you are waiting to dodge their charge move and then use your's it's going to be fairly weak since Shadow ball is only 45 damage. Either way you lose.

Well you have the fairly strong Shadow Claw. Honestly, Ghost is a pretty weak offense type, only hitting it self (basically other Gengar which you NEVER see in gyms) and Psychic (which can hit you back super effective since Gengar is part Poison). Sludge Bomb can at least heavily damaged the somewhat uncommon Wigglytuff, Tangela and Clefable super effectively and hit most pokemon fairly hard.

Totally agree with you, that the inherited low HP has rendered Gengar really bad in battling.

I think the worst for shadow ball was that the damage window was too short being roughly 100ms less than Sludge Bomb...

But evolving another Gengar could perhaps take me another 1 or 2 months as gastly does not spawn that often :(

Trust me I know your pain. My 91% IV Gengar that I evolved only once got Dark Pulse which is an even worse attack. I am now farming gastly again...
