Gengar Investment - meaningful puzzle
I am trying to decide whether to invest over 100K in a ShadowClaw Gengar. I have 3 and none are perfect.
My favorite is a level 30 that already has ShadowBall. 15A/14D/9S. - low stamina is not ideal but for 130K I can get him to 101 HP at level 39 (I am a level 38 trainer).
My second favorite does not yet have ShadowBall and is only level 20. For that same 130K and an unknown number of Charge TMs (I only have 2 and have not gotten one in a month), I could get him to level 34.5 and 101HP. He is 10A/15D/14S
Last, and I believe clearly least, is one that is level 31, has ShadowBall but is only 10A/4D/15S. For 102K dust, I can get him to level 38 and 105HP. But defense is poor.
Should I power up any of these? I have 400K total dust and will need some for MewTwo if I ever get one and Gen 3 when that happens. But Gengar seems useful for level 3 Raid solos and FocusBlast MewTwo.
What would you do?
Thanks,
David

If you really want a Gengar and are prepared to go all the way, I would go for the 10 atk iv one. I just did the math; at level 39 the kill speed of a 10 atk iv Gengar against Alakazam and Mew2 is so close to a 15 atk iv one's as to make no difference. The added bulk would handsomely compensate this in my opinion.
That said, I think your first Gengar is suitable as well, and you would have to invest a lot less. After all, Gengar will always be a niche attacker only.
I had an old Gengar hanging around in my storage from last November. Level 19.5, 91% 14A/15D/12S with SC/DP. I lacked a good Gengar and decided to go for it. I used a tm and got Shadow Ball first try. I powered it up to level 30 right then and there. It now sits at 33.5 (to hit Mewtwo breakpoints). I use it against Machamp, Gengar, and Alakazam. I consider it my expensive hobby. I could have done without it, but I've enjoyed the process and I enjoy using him.
I guess I don't have answer to your question. Sorry!
