Future Breakthroughs

With Raikou coming out (so sad because im instinct and I didnt get to use my 91 IV shiny zappy) it got me thinking, what if body slam snorlax was mostly just to give players a snorlax, its a pretty rare pokemon and even though it is a fan favorite, it isnt really the best on defense, machamp and a good number of other pokemon easily cut through our chubby friend like butter (thats not so say its bad on defense, its just lost out to the likes of blissey and slaking). I think it was more likely done to give players one before gen IV, where munchlax will take its place in eggs, and make it a lot harder to get, but it doesnt rule out the possibility that other legacy mon may be featured.

I think more future breakthroughs will be legendaries, and if they are going to do all thee of the beasts in an unbroken streak, that would mean that October will not be a shadow claw gengar breakthrough. I have a feeling they may do the beasts, then a legacy move pokemon from johto if they are going to be doing a pattern. I know that 3 legendaries, a legacy then a legendary without knowing whats after it isnt much for solid base for defining a pattern, but does it seem that could be possible?

I didnt play back when johto first came out, only joining at the tail end of hoenn, so I dont know what moves were legacy'd to johto pokemon

I think Niantic has been pretty good at listening to player's objections to some of their decisions.

First the responses that Articuno day would have regice raids too, then the suggestion that all gyms should be Articuno for the 3 hours, then it actually happening. I doubt it was always the decision, I think they listened to the player idea.

Likewise, people weren't happy about body slam Snorlax. We wanted the beasts. People with legacy Snorlax felt cheated. Perhaps Niantic intended to go a legacy route and decided it wasn't the right path, and went back to the beasts.

To me, it earns a lot of goodwill to make those mistakes and listen to player feedback and learn from it.

About legacy moves, I understand both sides, why people did feel cheated that already had them, but a lot of players didnt have them as well, they do seem to be wanting to even the playing field for players who started recently. The may only give players the 'best' of the legacy holders, which is something players do also want (I dont think even legacy holders would object to having another shadow claw gengar that could be an improvement on their already existing ones) as some legacy holders do exert significant leverage over newer players

I agree, they proabably did significantly change articuno day after the fans cried out, and maybe they will listen to players more, after zapdos day and the backlash, they may nolonger make them raid exclusive moves, but the other side of that coin would be legacy moves. they have somewhat worked themselves into a corner, and the feedback from players may be their only way out

I disagree - I think Body Slam snorlax was put into the research breakthrough list to separate the birds from the beasts, and to set things up so that people could get 5 Raikous instead of 4 (assuming you skipped/missed at most 2 days since research started, you should get 5 research breakthrough Raikous.)

How is Snorlax with Body Slam a worse defender than Slaking?

Gengar with Shadow Claw may return through a Halloween event.

It and slaking both go down just as easily, the only difference is slaking's massive CP that can disuade low level players and more casual ones

I've never had trouble with either of them, they dont do a whole lot, and cant timer stall like blissey. And I do somewhat think they arent even that good on defense because they do make it easier to clear gyms by not slowing a fighting type's rampage through a gym

It would seem odd if they did Raikou for August and then didn't do Entei and Suicune for the following two months. I'd be perfectly fine if they decided to skip Suicune entirely though 😋

I plan on using Suicune's month to align my breakthrough day so that I get the different breakthrough pokemon on the first day it's available. I've missed two days, and am barely able to get 5 Raikou (have to get the breakthrough before 4 PM EST on Sat, Sept 1, but I'll be traveling to Europe so it will be tricky - you can bet I'll have unclaimed research to get my seventh stamp at a moment's notice.)

BS Snorlax is much better at defending than Slaking. It takes longer to defeat and it's guaranteed to deal damage, unlike Slaking who relies on the attacker not being good at dodging.

Regarding the actual question, there really aren't any desirable legacy moves outside of gen 1. SC Gengar, KC Machamp, DB/DC Dragonite and BS Snorlax and that's pretty much it. Everything else is basically collection purposes only.

Yeah, probably has a bit more value still than the purely collectible legacy mons.

Slaking and snorlax both go down in similar time, there isnt a noticeable difference i've seen, the only difference is slaking is a lot more intimidating to players that are low level, more casual, or dont know how slaking works, meanwhile yes, snorlax does get off damage, but it doesnt pack an especially big punch. And both of them, when paried with a blissey, dont slow a fighting type down when clearing, because they can just save the charge move for the blissey if before, or not need to save a charge move for it if after the blissey

Machamp's legacy move is, from what ive heard, virtually identical to counter in terms of preformance, and sometimes slightly worse, but the others I have heard many great things from and seem more likely

No they don't, Slaking goes down in similar time to Milotic, Steelix, Umbreon etc, a bit over 20 seconds. Snorlax takes 30 seconds and is a tier above the aforementioned because of that. I agree with you that Slaking has additional worth against lower level players, but for punishing non-dodging players, they're actually pretty similar. Both will most of the time KO the first Machamp and shave some hp off the second one.

Karate Chop is easier to dodge with and about on par DPS-wise, situationally it's better or worse than Counter. Not a huge upgrade but the people with a KC/DP Machamp do seem to like using them.

Anyways, I really don't see them going for any Johto legacys because they aren't appealing. SC Gengar I think is the only one that would make people actually excited.

That gap doesnt seem too significant, hence I haven't noticed it when gym taking, as well as can easily be changed depending on how full energy is (keeping in mind snorlax's attacks do generate energy for you) that gap doesnt seem overly significant, as well as unlike blissey, it is easier to deal with them with nonmachamp pokemon because no need for dodging, which does cut into dps or fainting out one of your pokemon

It's almost as big as the gap between Blissey and Chansey. But since everything isn't maxed and full motivation all the time when we fight them, the differences between them often get smaller in real situations. Regardless, I think Snorlax wins the comparison because it's better in everything except intimidation through high CP.
