The animation you're talking about is from the anime. But unfortunately, Niantic decided to use the one from the main games which is not good at all. I totally agree, getting hit in the legs by roots is not a good animation for the grass starter exclusive move.

Oh, and you've missed an information. Venusaur glows green before stomping at the ground.

Good animation generally results in longer animation time. So i don't care that much about the animation, as long as it has less cooldown time.

I agree, it looks comically weak. A green, thorny version of stone edge would have been nice
