Why is Flareon such an unpopular generalist attacker? It is one of the highest neutral DPS mons in PoGo, is great against DG Blisseys, and resists fairy attacks which the big 3 gym attackers (Tyranitar, Dragonite, Machamp) are all weak to.
Also, although most of the big 7 resist fire, gyms are no longer comprised of just the big 7 now with the CP sorting removed, and the limit of 1 Pokemon per species per gym. "Fire is not relevant in meta" isn't an excuse now.
It is also the fastest neutral DPS Eeveelution, but for some reason many people prefer Espeon for a glass cannon generalist despite having lower defense and slightly lower attack.
Moltres' attack is only 5 higher than Flareon's. Eevees and their candies are so much easier to come by than Moltres. Eevees can also be caught at high level, while Moltres can only be caught at level 20. Using a charge TM on Moltres might cause jumping between Heat Wave and Fireblast, but for Flareon, both Flamethrower and Overheat are great moves. "Moltres is much better" isn't an excuse.
Or are people not using Flareon because it was rather useless in the main games? I hope this isn't the case.
As a generalist, dragonite and tyranitar are sufficient. As a fire specalist- yes Moltres is better.
I do not see the niche for Flareon anymore.
[Edit: Candys are not a problem anymore, thanks to "rare" candies, dust is. Moltres has more bulk than flareon. Only one perfect charged move in three may be expensive, but will not hold back players, i assume.]
I have a third generalist, Li-BS-Snorlax. My fourth generalist will be lugia.
I value bulk over speed in gym-battling.
Until now, i was not often confronted with high-level clefable and wigglytuff, so i did not even notice the problem.
If i had a problem with fairys, i would look out for a good poison attacker.

I powered up a level 30, 15-15-14 Wigglytuff with P/PR, and a pair of 14-15-15 Clefables with ZH/DG and P/DG. Not that the gyms last that much longer, but most generalist sweepers are poorly prepared for them.
I'd toss in a granbull, but I haven't found a high-level, high-CP one to toss in, and it's not worth stardust to play with, and the wigglytuffs and clefables were holdovers from old gymming.
And exeggutor and vaporeon are also better generalist, if dragonite and tyranitar are difficult to obtain for you.
I prefer generalists to be more tanky than Flaeron. Glass cannons are fast, but them you have to loss your time using potions after every battle. That doesn't happen with dragonite's resistance or T-rex, Vape or Exegg stamina.
Many statements of this posts are wrong.
Confusion + Futuresight Espeon has higher DPS than Flareon. And out of the most common 7 defenders, it is only resisted by Tyranitar. Flareon's Fire attacks are also resisted by Tyranitar, aside from that there are Dragonite, Gyarados and Rhydon in the list.
It will be useful against Steelix. But almost no one puts it unless he/she reads GP.
The real Generalist is Machamp. This four-armed beast is the most valuable attacker in gyms. Pair him with Jolteon to handle Gyarados, Dragonite/Articuno to handle Dragonite, and you will be ready for everything.
I consider Espeon to be the better generalist than Flareon out of the evee evolutions. This mainly due to type advantage over the common defenders.
Psybeam > future sight for both attacking and defending gyms as it hit so hard, quick and most important, can be used multiple times which is a dominant factor in today's gym scene.

Flareon only got relevant after new moves were added. By that time, fire types were irrelevant to the gym scene. People have been preparing for better mons in the meantime.
Now with moltres...yes, you are right. But moltres is cooler. Being stardust the limiting resource now (I can get hundreds of moltres candy with rare candy right now, but it will take me months to get a few hundred ks of stardust)... I will go for the coolest mon. Sorry, it is what it is

In a town, it is possible to get 10k dust with one hour of grinding. All you have to do is to catch one pokemon every 40 seconds.
During event, i mad 400k, with 3 and a halve evening walking and burning throu 10 incubators.
Yes, dust is the limiting ressource, but with a bit of grinding you can get it. A Pokemon-Plus helps.
