idk about that either but ign just posted an even better article with something I've been waiting for! New Charged TM and Fast TM items will also be added, which allow you to permanently teach one of your Pokemon a random new move. I'm so excited I'm going to use my first move change on this guy it can't get any worse

E3 2017: Major New Pokemon Go Update Will Change Gyms, Add Raid Battles

I like a lot of things but also can't understand some of them. First of all, going from 10 defenders to 6 it is bad, very bad, there are not a ton of gyms around so for me is a very big hit. Secondly it seems you have to actually visit the gym to feed the mon you have there, so this is a HUGE advantage for spoofers...Why Niantic? This is even less fair than before the rework, less spots, visit gyms to keep mon there, a big hit on legal players again...
Good points, love the idea of gyms being stops too, of the rare candies, the new TM and medals, nice addition on those ones, but please, reconsider the first points. Also like the idea of raid battles but I am very worried about what will happen if you live on a rural area or a place where there are not many players...up to 20 players to defeat the raid boss? How in the world I will find 20 players here? That is the number we were on July 2016, not even close to that number as today.
I do see a problem with this update though. Six Pokémon pet gym? Gyms near me change every hour so I don't understand how this will help but I'm staying optimistic and will wait-and-see. I am very excited for the rat near me change every hour so I don't understand how this will help but I'm staying optimistic and will wait-and-see. I am very excited for the raids mostly because you could be on the same team as someone from Mystic or valor or instinct doesn't matter and that's really cool. Hopefully they don't have a player cap for how many people can participate
"Pokemon Go will be disabling all gyms leading up to the update, but Niantic promises they’ll return shortly. According to Niantic, raid battles will begin in beta soon and only high-level players will see raids at sponsored gyms, with the update rolling out to additional players in the weeks that follow."
I'm still confused as to how long it will take until we can try the new gyms out. They use both the word "shortly" and "weeks." So what is it? Am I putting this game down until August?
The quote is from the official announcement, last paragraph.
"The Raid Battle feature will then be rolled out slowly over the next few weeks, starting as a beta, with raids visible only to a subset of players at certain Gym locations. Over a few days, we’ll invite more players to participate and enable raids at more Gyms around the world"

It depends, where do you live? If you are on a small town like me or in a rural area expect weeks yes, you will be able to try the new gym system as soon as the update rolls out like everyone, but once again cities and larger areas will have priority, they will start getting TM's, rare candies, and powerful mon from gym raids sooner than the rest of us, probably weeks as the announcement says...
