Extreme berry defending - why?
I had a bunch of extra potions to burn so I went out to take down a local gym. It was defended by 6 yellow, the only one of which that was much of a speed bump was a 2500 CP snorlax. So, I cruise through the first round taking big damage to 2 pokemon and slight damage to a third, heal, and go back for round 2. But someone has healed up the entire gym to 100%. No one else is there, so it's a remote feeding operation, or a gps spoofer. I'm there to burn potions so I go round again. The whole gym is healed again.
So I do this 3 or 4 more times and the whole gym is healed every time. Next I figure I can make this easier on myself by leaving without attacking the Snorlax, which is in the 4th slot. The first 3 are a 1800 slowbro, a 1800 rhydon and a 1300 sandslash.
I can take these down in about a minute with one pokemon and use a single poition to heal. I take out these first 3 about 15-20 more times, and they are getting healed every time. I figure I am getting pretty good XP (100 xp, I think) and 15 or so gym points for each battle and getting 3 battles per potion I am happy to do this for a while.
After 80, maybe 100 wins at this gym my phone battery dies. I am out 25 or 30 potions. I figure the guy defending is out maybe 80 golden raspberries? Or hundreds of other berries, though I'm not even sure it's possible to fully heal a 500+ cp of damage with regular berries remotely. I seem to heal about 50-90 with a remote berry and it declines fast.
So, the question is: Why? How can this be a good use of that many berries? They held the gym for another 4 hours or so after I left. If they had just let me take it, leave, and won it back it would have cost next to nothing.

Maybe they needed to hang onto the gym for another hour or two to get their coins and didn't have the time to go take over another gym. Plus you get stardust for feeding them.
Saturday, I had someone come by 8 minutes (so not even 1 coin!!) after I took a gym. I golden razzed him for about 45 minutes. They left, mon stayed in until 3am, I got my 50 coins before I woke up Sunday morning.
Could be waiting for a raid or just berries to burn...My wife has 100+ Goldens and taking up all her space...I used mine defending a while back so I am restocking, but will probably burn as well eventually in gyms...
You only need like 15 for each raid boss and probably more than safe with 20-30 as you keep getting more...
My time is the most valuable, but if I was sitting at a restaurant or at some park watching kids play or just waiting, chilling, eating, I have no problem attacking someone non-stop and burning their berries...I'm now sitting on over 600+ potions/revives...Those get tossed too now and item storage is maxed already.
Probably this. I had 130 golden berries, and being on the minority team, I only ever get around 6 balls per Legendary raid. Besides using them on high level, low catch rate Pokemon, what am I going to do with the things?
You do get that stardust and points towards a gym badge. I almost got a silver badge from only berry feeding.
Sounds like it might be a win win for you guys.
The problem with that theory is others can attack your gyms. My team controls very few high traffic gyms and the gyms we do control are more low traffic, which makes it even harder to get a group to do a raid there, because there are easier options.
I do try tho. On my days off I go and take down 20 gyms early morning. Most are taken down by noon.
Most likely they are not spoofers because spoofers can easily take it back after you leave. They probably want to collect the 50 coins and they don't want to go to the gym again after you leave. Is it a good use of berries? I would say yes if you have plenty of golden razz. Personally, I always find golden razz accumulate faster than I can spend and they take up a lot of my bag space
80 golden razz for 50 coins? It's not all that hard to get 50 coins. You could take down 30 or 40 full gyms for that many items I would consider to be of less worth than golden razz.
And if you were going to do this why razz all 6 pokemon? Why not just razz the snorlax after I killed it twice? I guess it's possible this guys poke was one of the ones before the snorlax, but who puts a cp 1300 sandshrew in a gym and spends 80 golden razz to keep it there?
I wouldn't have bothered banging my head against a cp 3000 blissey for long. If the defender waited until the third pass to heal it I'd be spending much time and potions for every one razz he spent. But in this case he was healing low level pokes that I could take down with ease and I was getting 3 wins per potion. And he was spending 3 berries. I could have easily outlasted him if my phone battery was charged.
I had over 300 golden berries a few days ago. I'm down to about 200 but I pretty much did the extreme defense too. You had potions to burn. I had berries and potions to burn. I never ever would have thought I'd be blowing these on gym defense when they first released. A few weeks later and I've stockpiled more than any other berry.
