EX Raid Question

Hey guys,

So I'm one of those trainers who plays and raids multiple times every single day, yet has not had the merit (?) of receiving an EX Raid pass. I believe I'm one of many, many, many...:(

Anyways, I will be spending some time in California, and of course plan to visit Santa Monica :)

I was wondering if the Sponsored Gyms (i.e. Sprint, Starbucks) still get EX raids like in the beginning, or is it only parks now?

If they still do, can anyone advise which gyms in Santa Monica to raid please?

Thanks guys :)

I don't live in Santa Monica, but both parks and sponsored gyms get EX raids. This article on this site: https://pokemongo.gamepress.gg/s2-cells-foundation-pokemon-go-design talks about S2 cells and how they're used to determine which gyms are eligible. I believe that for the last set of raids (and hypothetically going forward) they used level 13 as opposed to level 12 cells, but the methodology for determining eligibility is otherwise the same. That said:

1) Santa Monica is a hot spot for Pokemon Go with (I imagine) tons of spoofers and your chances to get a pass there are probably not that high relative to other less-trafficked areas.
2) If you're not going to be living there, getting an invite for an EX raid taking place 1-2 weeks later, after you leave, would be awful.

I would advise NOT raiding at eligible locations while you're there, unless you have a friend who can do the EX raid for you if you happen to leave before it's scheduled. I imagine you're better off finding out where the eligible gyms in your area are and raiding hard at those, especially since Niantic seems to be continuing to expand its invite system.

Agreed.
Though the last sentence needs to be verified, there's actually zero real clue that they will "expand" the invite system.
We are actually having 2 weeks without ex-raids (and more than one week without ex-pass-sent), which is actually a "reduction" of invites.

Yeah, I don't know what's up with the lag in invites. I do know that the last wave and the third-to-last wave were more generous in my area because of the 'new system', although ironically enough I got my first EX invite on the borked 2nd-to-last wave. Go figure.

It's a stupid lottery but I'll wait to pass judgment on the way the new wave works until we've seen it for a couple more weeks.

I wouldn’t intentionally avoid EX eligible gyms. I got a pass for an ex raid that was scheduled just two days after the raid that triggered the pass. Worst thing that happens is that he gets an ex pass he can’t use. There is no evidence that Niantic is less likely to give you a second pass, so no downside other than the disappointment. Plus, ex eligible gyms are more likely to attract a critical mass of trainers needed to complete L4 and L5 raids.

Try raiding in Ventura County or Orange County instead. We get lots of EX-Raids here.

Yes, all park and sponsored gyms can get ex raids. But beware! There are trap parks, in which it looks like a park with a gym in it, but the gym is NOT eligible because it does not have an overpass bracket.
