Can we evolve a eevee into an Espeon or Umbreon without the 10km buddy or renaming trick?

how to do the body trick and could you explain it please ?

Use an Eevee that you where going to evolve as your buddy and walk with him for at least 10Km...
Time to Evolve:
If you evolve your Eevee while still your buddy during daytime = Espeon
At Night = Umbreon

awesome trick, is this verified or just a theory ? i dont wanna risk a high iv eevee
