Dragonite: Power Up or Evolve

Hi all,

I'd like to get some advise. I caught my first Dragonite finally (see photo) who is said to have one of the better movesets, but his appraisal is really low. IV checks at 44%ish. On the other hand, I have a Dratini with 100% IV who I've had as my buddy since day one (311.7 km total walked!). He's at 103 candies now. I'm getting close to evolving him but I'm afraid of what moveset he'll end up with.
Is it better to just save my candies and use it up to power up Dragonite or evolve Dratini and cross my fingers?

100% Dratini should be evolved whenever imo!
Use halloween to get your candies and do both!

Evolve Dratini. In your case Steel Wing will still be a strong defender guaranteed to top the gym since it's 100% IV. So long as your 100% Dratini is a relatively high level (should be 2500 stardust or more) I think it's the right call.

It says 1900 to power up. Would that still be worth it? And thank you guys for replying.

I don't think your buddy of 311km would let you down like that. Nor should you let him down. It's his time.

Let us know what moves he gets after Halloween. Have faith in the little guy.

I just collected the last candy I needed to evolve him. He has DB/DP. Not the best attacker, not the best defender. Is it still worth powering up?

People around here sure do like their 100% IVs, don't they? :P I suppose if I had a 100% Dratini and didn't evolve it though, I'd constantly be asking myself "What if...?"

At the end of the day, you can always get more candies. If your Dratini evolves to have something like steel wing/hyper beam, just go back to powering up Dragonite #1. With a DB/DC moveset he will be a beast of an attacker, regardless of IVs.

Haha if it was 99iv I would say power the dragonite, but 100ivs are so rare. Just makes you feel good to have a little collection of perfects.

My 254 CP perfect IV Venomoth thanks you for your support. ;-) It's probably irrational, but yeah, I suppose there is something nice about having those perfects.

Mmmhmm got me a fearow, onix, krabby, and parasect. Useless, but no way I can transfer them. Guess I should just name them "Perfect" or something to group them together.

Evolve your 100% dratini!
I catched a CP 500~ Dragonair (100% IV), and I evolved it to Dragonite. It came with Steel Wing and Dragon Pulse, but I powered it up. Not the best Dragonite but it's a beast defending. I left it in a Gym 1 month ago and it's still there haha

Search, buddy, collect, save more candies then evolve & power up both. There's nothing wrong in having many Dragonite's.
-Dragonite is strong and will always be strong compared to other Pokémon's except for Lapras (But don't worry too much as all Pokémon's has there own weakness).
-0% Dragonite still has higher Base Stats than other Pokémon's that has 100% IV. How much more with your 44% or even best at 100%?
-0% to 100% Dragnoite will always have higher max CP than any other Pokémon's. (eg. your 44% will still reach 3300+ at max CP compared to 100% Dragonite that will reach 3500 CP, but still higher than a 100% Snorlax's max CP at 3100 allowing you to hold/defend gyms longer and collect more coins). :D
