Dragonite: how much worse is hyper beam?

Evolved a 78% IV Dragonite, ended up at 2587 CP (level 26) with Dragon Breath and Hyper Beam. For offensive purposes, how much worse is Hyper Beam compared to Dragon Claw/Pulse? This Dragonites cp is already pretty high, would it be better to just leave him where he's at and save my candy for another chance at Dragon Breath/Claw?

I wouldn't power it up, use it as it is, it's not optimal but it can still cause some serious damage to a gym. The most important thing is timing Hyper Beam properly so as not to get hit by a charge move. DPS-wise, it's even a little better than Dragon Pulse.

No it's not. Dragon Pulse does more DPS per cycle / over an extended period of time when averaged with quick move damage. Comparing charge move DPS on their own is irrelevant unless you plan on not using quick moves and only building energy through taking damage.

Feel free to disprove me.

It really depends on your fighting style and they are very similar. If you wait to dodge the defender charge move before using your charge move, then using HB will cause 120 damage and using 2 DP in a row will cause 130 damage. DP cooldown is 3.6s (2x = 7.2s) while HB is 5.0s. While you launch your 2 DP, you could use another 2 DB after using HB.

Can you tell me what your logic is?

Of course, in an ideal world you could use DP every time it is charged but there is a chance you will mistime it and get hit by the defender charge move.

I personally prefer big 100% charge moves because of my fighting style.

Any Dragonite with DB quick is worth using + powering up IMO. You already dropped 125 candy on him what's another 40?

I got 5 Steel Wing in a row. Could happen to anyone.

I have all 3 charge moves, and while Hyper is my least favorite charge move, it's still a complete assassin.

Also, keep in mind that you're acting less than thrilled about a top 5 DPS Pokemon in the whole game that's already at lvl 26. I'd take him to lvl 30 and start working on the next stone-cold killa

try to put him in vs. single bar defenders. Wait for them to use their charge and then lights out

If you're just spamming attacks non-stop, all the movesets are very similar in DPS, you're only looking at a few seconds of difference between DC and HB.

However if you need / want to dodge, you'll lose out on DPS if you're waiting for the opponent's charge move before you use yours, and charge moves that have low energy requirements (such as Water Pulse) can mean you still get hit by one for full damage, making Hyper Beam worse in those situations.

If you're fine with settling with this one (which wouldn't be a bad thing to do), sure why not power it up. It's still going to be better attacker than any other Pokemon you currently have even with Hyper Beam.

But if you eventually want one with DB + DC, then save your candies unless you catch a lot of Dratinis, since powering up to 30 won't make much of a difference in combat but it'll slow down your next evolution by 32 candies.

As long as the Dragonite has DB for the quick move then it is good for taking down gyms. Any charge attack can do serious damage. The issue comes when you want to use it as a defender. HB takes too long to charge up and when you use it the animation time is too long. if the attacker dodge it the can spam quick attacks or use a charge attack

I have 3264cp Dragonite with DB/HB and I destroy Vaporeon with it, 2-3 vaporeon before I have to switch out (dodging, of course). There are very few pokemon that it does not annihilate quickly. It's my favorite offensive pokemon.

Hyper Beam is only a tiny bit worse. Honestly, dragon breath and anything is good for offense.
