Does it simply mean that you disagree? Or is it stronger: to be used for something objectionable (rude or disrespectful)? Is it just a personal thing or is it meant to have a universal meaning?

Good question. I think people downvote for various reasons.
(1) They disagree with a statement that is an opinion
(2) They think that a statement states facts incorrectly (lack of knowledge)
(3) They are mean spirited trolls that want to cause trouble
(4) They are happy trolls that enjoy causing trouble
(5) They know the OP's rep and downvote them based on their past posts being downvote worthy
(6) They know the OP's rep and downvote them based on personal vendetta
(7) They know the OP's rep and downvote them based on believing that they are trolls

People take downvotes too seriously - it could simply mean disagreeing, nothing more. If one strongly disagrees, he/she will follow up with a reply. A simple downvote, in this senses, suggests "slightly/moderate disagree".

That said, some downvotes don't make sense and are more troll-like. OP, plz don't feel discouraged getting downvotes - it happens to all of us! Constructive discussions on the game are always welcomed in GamePress Q&A.

I'm the lonely upvoter here. I like Bellick. When I close my eyes I picture Brad Bellick from Prison Break.

They can also happen by accident if one is browsing on a tablet (as I am now) and accidentally hits it with their thumb without realizing. I have done that, then later noticed the red downvote (or upvote) and cleared it. Hope I didn’t leave any out there.

But yeah. As others have said, a good portion of them are simply due to troll-like behavior. Probably from frustrated 14-year-olds.
