Don't bother powering anything up for Mewtwo
Full disclosure: I got an EX raid pass, battled Mewtwo today, defeated it, and I caught it 78% IVs. If the rest of this comes off as entitled and "first world problems" I get it. Don't bother reading any further, I don't blame you.
The Mewtwo my group faced today had Psycho Cut/Focus Blast. I thought that was fine. I led with my 2 Shadow Ball Gengars, my Scizor, and 3 Tyranitars. I then proceeded to have ALL SIX of my team suffer lag death due to the dodge glitch. I had specifically powered up my best Gengar to level 33.5 and my Scizor to level 31.5 to hit breakpoints. I had my Tyranitars up to 32, 32, and 30. My entire team fainted out with only about 15 seconds of battle remaining. I went back with an audio selected Dragonite team and didn't even make it all the through Dragonite number 1 before victory. Our team of 10 win in about half the allotted time. I got 0 damage balls.
What's my point? If you're obsessing over your team, you probably don't really need to. You really just need a big enough group. If you're worried about doing the most damage, then don't bother dodging. If you bring Tyranitar against Focus Blast you run the risk of not getting a single shot off (like at least one of mine did). I don't regret spending the dust because all the pokemon listed have helped me solo tier 3 bosses. But don't spend a bunch of dust just to take out Mewtwo. Take the best of what you already have and you'll be good.

I certainly understand that. However, in the heat of the moment, I didn't want to sit in the lobby while everyone else around me battled. Plus it wasn't in the red when I went back in. Mewtwo just goes down that fast.
Also, I think you missed the main point of my post. The point is, I could have fainted out and rejoined with a team half as good as what I brought. I know a lot of people are spending a lot of dust preparing for a 2 minute (or less) battle and most of it is overkill.
I don't really know. At lvl 35; raidboss mew and celebi using tyranitar and Mewtwo, Mewtwo seems to have only 6% higher DPS. To that Tyranitar is more bulky.
Mewtwo is better, but I wouldn't say it makes a big difference, more minimal. I wouldn't say B/C vs B/SE is a big difference but it is almost double that of mewtwo vs tyranitar.
I appreciate the knowledge/info; more immediately having a Shadowball Mewtwo at level 30 helps me try Gengar and Alakazam solos without as much worry. Easier solos needed for me because we are losing Raikou in USA and getting whatever we'll get Time saved and battery not burned worth dust/candy spent on as many level 30+ Mewtwos as possible.
Basically whatever you want. I don't regret spending any of my dust because the Tyranitars, Gengar, and Scizor all make big differences in soloing tier 3 bosses (all but Alakazam so far). Otherwise spend it however you want. Max out something unusual. Power up a diverse team of attackers of each type. Spend it all on Mewtwo. All I'm saying is don't spend all your dust trying to defeat Mewtwo because winning the battle isn't that difficult.
I also faced Mewtwo today.
I spent the last week preparing 2 teams: 2 Gengar SC/SB, 2 Ttars, 2 Scyzor and 2 Houndoom for FocusBlast (lvl 31~36) and 6 ttars (lvl 38~33) for anything else.
We (~6 guys) captured the gym 4 hours before and spent 2 hours using berries against ~40 attackers to kept it ours (Instinct).
We grouped 12 to the raid, my app crashes just on the final countdown (LOL)!!! The group kept going, I reopened the app and re-entered with the auto selected team (2 gengars and 4 Dnites lvl 36-39 for FocusBlast Mewtwo). End up with 1 extra damage ball, 12 total. Got the Mewtwo on the very first ball (great throw, golden berry).
So, as OP said, don't worry too much about capturing Mewtwo.
two points for the OP.
- dodging is a waste of time.
- in the situation where you describe (all your pokemon fainting just before end of battle) it's smart to quit and rejoin after two or three of your pokemon faint. That way your new team of six should survive and you get damage bonus.
I've done that many times and smiled to myself as everyone else faints out :)
