Does gen 2 have the worst starter pokemon?

Gen 1 has the best starters and makes me nostalgic for my childhood, but i quite like many of the others aswell. Blaziken is kick ass cool, Swampert has a great water/ground pairing, and penguins are cute.

But for some reason i never liked the gen 2 starters. Meganium and Typhlosion are boring compared to Venusaur and Charizard. A crocodile pokemon is cool, but in the main games Feraligator was a relatively weak starter Pokemon. So none of gen 2 did it for me.

I had an awful com day with Chikorita. Walking round the cold rain for a pokemon which didn't interest me, just cos i needed shinys. Everyone in my group was tetchy that day. I might not even bother with Cyndaquil. It won't be competitive with blast burn anyway, owing to having the weak ember as its fast move.

Am i being harsh, or are the gen 2 starters the worst?

I can see SC/BB Typhlosion as being sneaky good in a PVP setting. It would have better type coverage with no double resistance, while sporting identical stats to Charizard. Feraligator ought to jump up to Gyarados levels if it gets Hydro Cannon.
I see Meganium as something like Blastoise: just not suited for Pokemon Go (though, I maxed out a Blastoise with Hydro Cannon because it was always my favorite, and I only ever played the Gen 1 games).

From what I've seen though, the Gen 2 starters do seem to be generally outclassed by other gens currently available. Granted, my only experience after gen 1 is with Pokemon Go.

No no, they are the worst.

I think in a lot ways they are the worst. With Typholsion as much as I liked him in the main games had the exact same stats as Charizard. Gen 3 and 4 have far better starters that are more useful overall. Gen 5 I don’t like either but for go, I think Emboar and Samurott can be useful. Gen 6-7 have a ton of potential also.

Typhlosion will still be a formidable fire type with Blast Burn, somewhere between Charizard and Entei I believe.

Ember holds it back too much. Its DPS is between that of Entei and FF/FP Houndoom. Flareon is a better fire attacker and doesn't have an exclusive move.

Venusaur>>Meganium
Charizard>typhlosion
Blastoise<<

Gen3&4 are clearly better.

So I‘d say yes. The reason is not the 2-1 but also the lack of good grass types which makes Venusaur a semi god. While Feraligatr will still be outclassed by Kyogre
