Does CP matters for gym defenders?

I read that each defeat by an attacker will reduce the CP of defender by about 28% of its max value (assuming the max value is when it is not wounded) . And by the 3rd successful attack, the defender will be kick out of the gym. So does it mean the CP values doesnt matter as each defeat will reduce the CP by 28% , irregardless of a high or low value. Also what is the linkage between CP and motivation ? Hoping to get some good answers here, thanks !!

A big fat 3k Blissey still deters people a bit, but otherwise it's not terribly important.

With the current gym system its honestly not worth analysing or overthinking it. Check out the top defenders list on this site and if you've got a high cp one of them put that in. But honestly wether you put a 10cp weedle or a 3kcp blissey, if someone wants to take the gym they'll take it regardless of what you put in there. Yes the big mons make it a slower process but not by much. With raids now just about everyone except new players have a high cp counter to everything so it honestly doesn't make that much difference. Certainly don't lose sleep over it and personally i wouldn't invest dust in a defender unless it was a high iv blissey or snorlax and even then id think twice before doing so. Add in the fact that spoofers are still rampant and its even less worth thinking about. The solo objective of this game now is just climbing the raid ladder sadly, gyms are pretty trivial. Sorry to be negative

Take the case of CP 10 weedle, at full health . Probably it will also take 3 tries before its being kick out of the gym, just that its faster to kick him out compared to a 3k blissey. Of course the damage to the attacker would be in proportion to the CP of the defender.

Yes. If motivation is 100% it will always be 3 battles regardless of the defending mons lvl or cp.

The 10cp weedle is an extreme example but there are people who put mons like this. Then when its defeated they just transfer them instead of using revives and potions.

Whatever you put in just gotta hope it lasts 8 hours to get your daily coins. Or longer if you're wanting to keep the gym for a raid or to get a gold badge. And don't put anything in the gym that you might need for a raid that pops up

Yes if the mon has 100% motivation it will be 3 battles to knock it out. If the cp has decayed from time or other prior battles it will take less battles to knock it out, depending on the remaining motivation %. From what i understand all mons cp decay the same now regardless of lvl or cp value?

Low CP Mons decay slower than high CP ones. I don't know of a definitive threshold number where the cut off is but it's between 1500-2000.

Ok. I thought they changed it so all were the same after there was that bug with motivation decay. Though i haven't really looked into it so i couldn't say

CP only matters if the gym is a highly contested gym and you want to extend your time in there to squeeze out an extra coin. And in that case, CP only really matters because higher CP Pokémon ~generally~ have more HP and Defense than lower CP Pokémon, so are more likely to drag the first two battles out to about 45-60 seconds until a good attacker beats them. Factor in the time it takes to get back into the battle after each round, add a few extra seconds for each battle vs the more powerful (Def + Sta, anyway) Pokémon, and you might be able to turn a 09min (and X coins) into a 10min (and X+1 coins) defense of gym. Other than that? There isn't currently a good reason to put high CP Pokémon onto gyms.

Now, lower CP Pokémon might have an advantage. I've noticed regularly that my CP 559 Wobbuffet is still at fairly high motivation (+60%) after 8 hours on a gym while the others on the gym are down to essentially 0% motivation. Like others here, I was under the impression that this was supposed to have been changed so that all Pokémon lose motivation at the same rate, but still, it seems like the Wobbuffet (with Counter, woohoo for not being an entirely useless defender!) is "stronger" in the long run than higher CP Pokémon. Don't take that as Gospel, just as a potentially erroneous observation.

The one time good defenders are important is when you are trying to control a gym before a raid. Otherwise, it doesn't matter too much.
