Defending Machamp moves

I have lots of offensive Machamps, but am looking for a gym defender. I have two with the legacy charge moves Submission and Cross Chop. Gamepress rates them C and A-, respectively, as defenders. In my experience, though, Submission is confusing to face as an attacker, because most attacking players have not seen it. Thus although Submission may be "weak and easy to dodge", most players who have not seen it and do not know how to dodge it.

Which Machamp would you use as a defender? Counter / Dynamic Punch is rated 'A' but everybody has got to be expecting that.

The Machamp that I'd use as a defender is the one with low IVs that I picked up from a raid and am willing to transfer once it faints.

Otherwise, BP or Co with HS would be my pick. Typical Machamp counters resist fighting-type damage, and, while difficult to dodge, Machamp won't last long enough in a gym battle to get a CC off. All in all, though, don't put Machamp in on defense. Even Slowking is a better option in and amongst the usual suspects.

Hariyama is much more annoying as a gym defender. Especially with BP/HS.

I would never use Machamp as a defender, it's just not really suited for that job. Hariyama is much better but has the downside of potentially making other mons in the gym hard to feed because of its humongous hitbox.

Machamp is amazing because it fits into many roles (raid boss counter and normal-type slayer in gyms, namely). However, gym defense is not one of the roles Machamp is suited for. If you really want a fighting-type defender, I'd suggest Hariyama.

The grades only compare moves to each other, not to other species. In other words, the A defending set for Machamp is worse than an F defending set for Gardevoir (for example).

It doesn't really matter. I'd probably just be able to defeat it before it got a charge move off. Maybe it would get one move off.

If you're set on a defensive Machamp, I would just trust whatever moves this website says is best.
