Dark Tyranitar as a gym attacker

How useful is Dark Tyranitar as a gym attacker? Against the Normal-type tanks, it is much slower than Machamp and equally weak to their Fairy-type moves (despite resisting all their fast moves). Gardevoir and Metagross have secondary typings (with STAB moves) that punish Tyranitar, while Exeggutor and Slowbro are not that common here (ironically, they were very common under the old system). Will Gen IV introduce good Psychic-type and Ghost-type defenders?

I don't like ttar at all as a gym attacker. He has too many weaknesses, and crunch is so slow it makes dodging hard.

Not really useful. The best psychic-type defender is Gardevoir whose fairy type makes it neutral to dark and B/C Tyranitar's neutral damage isn't great by comparison to other top-of-type attackers. I sometimes bring B/C Ttar because of its 3-bar charge move for clearing low motivation gyms but that's it.

If the DPS was adequate, Tyranitar being weak to the defender's moves would be a non-issue, it's incredibly tanky.

Gen 4 will introduce at least Drifblim, which might be used as a Machamp wall due to its triple resistance. It's not tanky enough to pose a problem for generalists and people will likely pack a flying-counter anyway due to Togekiss.

Mewtwo with SB performs most of the same roles without the liabilities you mentioned. My gym team is: Machamp x2, Raikou, Mewtwo, Latios, Kyogre.

Looks pretty much like my gym team, except I use Articuno instead of Latios.

I've always found it useful but thats because where I am Its almost always foggy in the morning so my Dark tyranitar makes quick work of most things, plus its at the top of my CP sort so it always an easy find. But outside of that, if you dont have that foggy boost and low motivation on gyms, it isnt that good for clearing out

I have a feeling it might be more useful when gen 4 drops. Drifblim has triple resistances to Machamp so it will probably be in every gym. Togekiss will be weak to rock variants, but its fairy moves will hurt ttar.

Well it may not be that threatening, Dazzling gleam gardevoir doesnt hurt that much and togekiss has less atk plus a weakness to rock, so it may not be able to do that much, but depending on its fast move that could change

Togekiss is pretty much the reason why we won't be running dark Ttar for Drifblim. Flying-type counters are much more efficient because they also murder Togekiss so Raikou, rock Ttar, Mamoswine etc. are more likely to make gym teams.

I personally don't consider Tyranitar a gym attacker at all (nor a generalist). I think that it's a very specialised attacker and it's use is very limited to specific raids.
B/C are not the best dark moves either (although it could be worse).

The only reason I use them in gyms (and even made one B/SE) is nostalgia from the old gym system.
