Curveball fail

My catch rate for legendaries varies from 90% for Zapdos to 35% for Moltres. It seems the difference is accounted for by not getting credit for curveballs on Moltres. The trajectory is virtually identical in both cases, EXCEPT with Moltres the ball stops and closes over the bird BEFORE crossing the center line. With Zapdos it closes just after crossing the center line.

Does anybody have any suggestions on how to adjust my throw so that the ball closes after crossing the center line?

I should mention that I freeze the circle by lifting my finger, and then wait for the mon to attack. I then throw during the attack, so that my ball lands just as the circle reappears.

Question, are you only throwing at Moltres when he is "low"

No, I throw when he is both high and low. But I've noticed when I do manage to capture him I don't get credit for a curveball.

Ok. I have learned to only throw at him when he is low. There is some funky mechanic where when he goes up he is actually further away which changes so much versus the standard throw.

Also, I throw from the corner as mentioned below. You can find some pretty good videos on youtube on this very subject. Since I cannot see your throw or it's mechanics here it is pretty hard to help you like a video can.

Pull the ball to a corner 1st, then spin and throw from there.

sample size under 50 is too small to draw any conclusions.

In order for your success rate to drop from 90% to 35% would need more than just the loss of curve bonus. Losing the curve would drop your success rate from 90% to about 75%. Likely, you are also getting fewer balls and hitting fewer excellent throws, plus everyone's favorite catch phrase--RNG.

But your catch rates are close to mine, I know I was having a harder time getting quality shots on moltres because the distance was deceiving.

You're right, I have trouble even getting a Great! with Moltres. But at least all my balls are hitting. I caught one recently and received NO bonus, just Pokemon Caught!

I have addressed this issue in the past but I found the solution. For a curveball to be registered, the ball needs to hit the target at the opposite side if we consider a vertical axis passing from the middle of the target. Eg if you spin the ball rightwards then the ball needs to land at the left of the axis. If you spin it leftwards then it needs to land at the right. This issue has been examined also in the silph road.
