Community day odds

So the day after I get a sinnoh stone and evolve a good rhydon I was lucky enough to catch a Rhyhorn with perfect IVs. I was gonna put it pretty high on the list for stones, but it occurs to me that it might be worth saving. Given its three stage and has a signature move in rock wrecker it seems like there is a chance it gets ponied up for community day treatment.
What do you guys think? I've ogt one decent one already so i don't mind waiting, but on the other hand it needs an item to evolve, and I don't think thats been true of any other community day pokemon, so maybe not worth waiting for never?

I don't expect any Pokémon that needs an item to Evolve will get a Community day, particularly for Pokémon that have shared Evolution Items.

That said, I would probably hold off on that Perfect for a little while just in case Niantic decides to throw us another curveball, like they did with Eevee day. It's probably worth waiting a month or two and see if Niantic does something different over the next few months that might make my reasoning invalid.

Which would be nice.

I'll be even more specific, I don't expect any Pokemon that isn't a starter or a pseudo-legendary to get a Community day. It's very early to judge, but only those seem "guaranteed" to get a CD. There are so many 3 stage Pokemon that people would like to see getting their own exclusive move, like rhyhorn, ralts, togepi, slakoth, trapinch, even lotad... I'm not saying there's no way X Pokemon gets a community day, I'm just saying I wouldn't wait for something that might happen sometime in the next 2 years

I mean, we already got a Mareep day... Not a starter in ANY game afaik, and certainly not a pseudolegend.

Yeah I'm not saying it's impossible. It's just that the first year we had 3 pseudolegends, 7 starters (including Pikachu and Eevee here even though they're unique) and Mareep. It seems like Niantic is prioritizing starters and pseudolegends... For me keeping specifically a Rhydon or a Trapinch for community day isn't worth the wait from what we've seen so far, starters and pseudos are a far safer bet

Mareep fits another classification, being 10 km hatch but more notably, rare and non-nesting. That gives it a lot of value from a more casual perspective, as people who didn't hatch a lot of eggs or hunt with maps might have taken a lot of time to evolve their first Ampharos. Ralts, Trapinch and Slakoth fit this description, some of them are more common in some biomes than Mareep ever was, but there are people all over the world that might really appreciate the chance of easy candy.

It's likely more about what pokemon people really want to see than any abritrary rules, so I think those three are good candidates.

Yeah you're right the 10km hatch is also worth mentioning. I'd say Ralts has the best chances as it's kind of a starter, I think your rival started with one in the main series (like pikachu vs eevee in Yellow)

Now everybody is worrying about whether or not to evolve their perfect iv pokemons. Kind of sad really.

Blame Niantic and their inability/reluctance to add a Special TM or something so people who catch perfects outside their 3 hour power window don't feel disappointment over what should be exciting.

Agreed. Now I’m always bummed when I get a good larvitar or beldum when I shouldn’t be

There's a limit to how many you want to spend resources on. I have six maxed and a solid B team, new Larvitars with good IVs don't really have any function to me except waiting for SD to be available again.

Yeah, but I have more than enough good ones of those and I don’t really have storage for an unnecessary 7th or 8th etc...

Maybe not community day but it can get a raid day. We could evolve haunters in addition to Gengar raids.
Since Rhyperior will be in raids stone evolution would be bonus for those prepared.

Or sinnoh stone could be like sunglasses squirtles from pokestop quests

If you don’t have a need for it don’t do it.... Truthfully you shouldn’t power up or evolve anything unless you have an immediate need (personally I think a Dex entry or just because you think it’s cool can be considered a need).... On side note this idea that you shouldn’t evolve a Pokémon that you have a immediate need for because it may or may not get an event day and it may or may not get a better move that may or may not be significantly better that the moves it can already get is absolutely ridiculous .... Seriously I’m I the ONLY person that catches multiple high IV high Level of an event day Pokémon???

Lucky you, I've had multiple community days where none of my catches stood out in a meaningful way. Trading is the only reason I have the plethora of >90% MM Metagross that I have.

It's not just a matter of being lucky or not, a 4 hours window to get an exclusive move hinders players from evolving their best pokémon at will. Some people don't find high IV during CD, for example. About the CD exclusive moves, they often have a big impact on the Pokémon's performance and has some way of affecting the meta, even if just slightly.

I've been saving 3 100% Ralts/Kirlia, for example, because only Niantic knows if there is going to be a Ralts CD and if the exclusive move is going to be good whatsoever. But knowing it could become even meta defining makes people wait for months even if it's just a possibility, no one wants to evolve their best pokémon only to find out someone else evolved the same mon with the same IV but the latter is a lot better by having the exclusive move.

It makes people stagnate a portion of their game so they don't miss the advantage available only in a really short period of time and I find that mindset at least a bit counterintuitive.

On this note, I’m interested in how they’ll handle porygons community day (it is a 10k mon) seeing as it not only needs an upgrade, but also a sinnoh stone. Feebas too since you have to walk with that one. Wonder if they’ll lower or remove the restrictions for the 4 hour window.

"Muh Eevee curveball" aside, Feebas doesn't qualify for a Community Day. Porygon getting one would pretty much mandate stop research giving out Up-Grades and Sinnoh Stones as research rewards or something, but so far we don't have reason to believe they'll give him a CD. Especially since Porygon-Z just came out.

Sorry but the eevee thing you said went over my head. And what makes you say that feebas won’t get a community day? And why don’t you think porygon will get one in the future?

If you feel you need another Rhyperior, go for it. If you don't... just wait.

Most of Rhyperior's moves are bad. Not sure he would really help me in any fight right now, I'd only need him if the birds or raikou return. However I like keeping good moves, so I'll definitely make sure I have a Rhyperior with Rock Smash, which is Rhyperior's best move by far. If his moveset ever changes, it can only become better.
