Coin Pay Rate

The guy that defended this gym just gave my 49 coins. Prior to that I only had 1 coin earned today. Can someone explain this is connection with the pay rate?

Not at this time. They just made it easier to get coins, but as a trade off we get less daily

I got 102 yesterday within 22 hours.

And I just had a vaporeon defend for 1hr22, and got zero coins. I don't understand this pay scale.
