Charizard's Legacy Moveset

Hey, guys. So, my 100% Charizard knows Wing Attack/Dragon Claw, an ancient moveset which is most likely extremely rare nowadays for Charizard. I personally enjoy this moveset a lot, as I frequently use him as a Dragonite slayer, and sometimes even for Blissey and Snorlax, too. It could even prove to be potent against Salamence when he soon makes his mark in the meta.

But, with the new weather features coming soon, I don't know if having this legacy moveset may be beneficial for Charizard in the long run. Weather conditions that boost fire types will not give my Charizard's moveset a boost since it does not consist of fire-type moves, whereas if he did have fire moves, not only would his attacks get boosted, but he'll also get stab from it. This is probably what will make fire-type Pokemon useful in the game, especially against the long-awaited Metagross. What do you guys think? Should I give my Charizard fire moves to benefit from appropriate weather conditions, or should I keep the legacy moveset? I really love this moveset, and don't want to change these legacy moves, but if it is necessary, I'll do it. Thanks!

I've got the same one...level 20 98%. Definitely not necessary for me to change the moves.

I don't think anything about Charizard is "necessary." My highest level one has the same moves, and I've left it alone. There are better Fire attackers if that's what's required, and I'm frankly waiting to see if I can create an all-Flying 'zard. Maybe he'll get a Flying charge move with the rework to allow for that. In the meantime, I'm so tired of Fire Blast, Overheat, and Fire Spin; I don't need another Pokemon with those moves.

Do you currently use your WA/DC Charizard for any Pokemon, other than Dragonite?

Unfortunately, no. There just isn't that much use for it. If it had Fire moves, I'd probably use it against DG Blissey instead of Flareon due to the coolness factor (or in Machamp raids, as suggested below), but that's about it, so TMing wouldn't bring that much benefit. I love Dragon Claw, and I powered it up originally because I wanted to have the DC experience and it took me forever to get a Dragonite. But now that I have a DC 'nite, it's just better at it. :)

Okay, makes sense. If that's the case, I'll probably give my Charizard a cTM to benefit from weather when it comes out. Thanks! :)

A double flying Charizard would be awesome. I agree about the plethora of fire mons, but OH is a really good move, and in addition to the powerful fire spin pairing, OH can be fun to use with non-fire quick moves, such as shadow claw on Typhlosion, and now wing attack on my Charizard.

You're right, of course. If I tried to use a TM, I know I'd play Fire Blast/Dragon Claw ping-pong, however. :)

I TMd mine to have wing attack and overheat. Wanted to power one charizard up just to have - if you like the moveset then keep it. Even with double fire moves, there are stronger fire options.

GamePress lists WA/DC as C-tier for ATK and DEF, which makes sense to me considering there is no necessary use for Charizard, but I've been able to sweep a couple of gyms with this moveset, something I don't think I'd be able to do with fire moves. So, I'll probably keep it. Thanks!

I've had the same one for almost a year, and I finally charge TM'd it. It was a tough choice, but I am now very glad I did it. I had powered it up to level 35, and occasionally used it against Dragonites in the old gym system, but it really wasn't all that good. Dragon claw is fast, but not very powerful. There are obvious objectively better Dragonite counters, and if I wanted to use something fun, I would rather use my 100% DB/B Kingdra, or a PS/A Piloswine. So, the Charizard, though cool, was rarely used.

I finally TM'd it, and was fortunate to get OH. Now with WA/OH, it is a beast as either a flying type with massive neutral charge move damage, or a powerful fire type, with a neutral but STAB quick move. And flying and fire moves synergize well against certain defenders/bosses. I can use it for a number of gym applications, or in Machamp raids, Victreebel raids, Scyther raids, etc.

I still have DC on 2 of my 4 Charizards, one with AS, and one with FS, that I can power up if and when I decide to, but the 100%'er, currently level 37, is now very powerful and useful, instead of just a cool diversity mon.

That's the thing, I want my Charizard to be useful, but with the current moveset he has, and with the new weather conditions coming, he'll most likely just be a trophy. I feel like I only use Charizard for Dragonite only with this moveset and no one else, and I want to use him for various situations. If I can benefit from a weather boost and stab, then I'll be inclined to change his charge move to Overheat. I'm definitely gonna keep Wing Attack, as it feels faster than Air Slash. If your WA/OH Charizard is useful, I think I'll give him a TM. Thanks for the advice!

Regarding weather, dragon and flying are both listed as boosted by wind. I assume that is going to go by the move's type, not the pokemon's types, so Wing Attack/Dragon Claw would at least both be boosted by the same weather.

That's actually a good point you made. Charizard could get a boost from both Dragon and Flying, rather than just a boost on one move if he had a Flying quick move and a Fire charge move. Although, if I did give Charizard OH, and it got a boost from clear weather, and stab stacked on top of that, that would be insanely powerful.

Leave it as it is. It clearly makes you happy, and if you get rid of those moves, there is no going back.

Find another mon to fill the attacking needs.
