How about free candies for blue team

Not exactly accurate. In my neighborhood all except 2 gyms are red and they are all level 10. I drive out of the city into small towns where the gyms don't change much and change them all blue and eventually they become level 10 from other trainers doing the same as me.

I can take down a level 10 red gym across the street from me but it will be back to a level 5 red gym in less than 5 hours.

That's just the thing, that is your personal experience, and since Pokemon Go is a game where the place you live is a defining factor of your success in so many ways, there are bond to be cases like yours. But the reality is that team Mystic has, by far, the largest percent of players, and probably has an even higher percentage of the active player base.
Here is a pretty extreme scenario: somewhere in the world, there is someone who lives in an area where all Gyms are often level 10 Team Instinct, and this person does not understand all the "Team Mystic have way to many Gyms" comments we often see

We do not have to many gyms. Only a few here and there for the precious stardust every 21 hours lol.

People need to back off Team Mystic, it's old now. Team Valor is very fierce in my whole area, with most gyms to their name and best ones as well. All high CP (if you value that) and no filler.

Mystic has grown stale, most high level players only care about getting to 40, hanging around lures all day and have completely forsaken the gym meta. Leaving Team Valor to take over.

And if I look at GymHuntr, Team Valor gyms are getting up all around the world daily by a lot. I'm sure they will lead in a couple of weeks.

Just be aware that in some areas gyms don't change very often... I think the dust/coins is good enough to keep some balance in the game. Walk with your buddy to get candy...

Why not just tell players levels 22 and below to just quit at that point? The buddy system is stingy, but fair I don't see an issue with it.

Maybe not 24 hours,

But 1 or more candy when you collect your reward depending on which pokemon you are defending with, sounds like a good option to me.

Aka, you have a lapras, charizard and chansey defending 3 gyms. When you collect your bonus, as well as the usual, you get '3 lapras candy, 3 charizard candy, 3 chansey candy)

Imo it needs to be more than 1,

atleast 3 i think, so its the equivalent of catching one of that pokemon.

5 could be too much, especially for people that get crazy amount of gym defends, but then again it would still take awhile to get allot of a certain type of candy

(unless you have like 15 of the same pokemon all with good CP and chances are won't need the candy xD)

Make it an award for attacking and defeating a gym instead.

Maybe an award with a low chance (1 in 20 or something like this) to get a candy of the defeated pkms type after each fight you win.
This would encourage fighting big gyms and hard defenders, as well as leveling gyms.

This would be great if we went back to that short lived system where prestige loss was high and prestige gain was low.
There are mobs of team blue everywhere around here and most gyms are L10 blue. Occasionally a red horde will come in and take them down only to be replaced generally within a day or 2. I'm team yellow and go out at lunch to try and battle a gym to fetch a coin. I am almost always solo. So, taking down a gym is normally useless (especially since the potions/revives have become few). My only hope is to time it just right when one or the other team has just taken the gym and I only have to battle 2-4 critters.
So, extra rewards for someone keeping a gym for 24 hours... not if favor as its too easy at least for the group around here who "dominate" them.

I guess not staying in 24 hrs but 1st mon to defend the GYM.... Fair enough...

I'd never get one. The red team kicks me out of the gym within an hour of taking their level 6-8 gym down. How about rewarding a single player who takes any level 6 gym or higher down solo, because that's what I have to do in my town.

Now I'd be up for that. Although that kinda goes against their goal of social activity.
