Can my field research reward Pokémon be above my level?

Hey, so for my field research reward Pokémon, an Entei appeared. To try to catch it I used a lot of pinap berries and ultra balls, but he keeps escaping- am I too weak a level to catch him? If I get enough stamps for my next reward before catching him, what happens? Thanks! Appreciate it.

Research Pokemon are always at level 15 regardless of trainer level. Entei has a base catch rate of 2%, making it pretty painfully hard if you're unable to throw curves and land catch bonuses.

To add to that, RNG can play an annoying component too. I've been able to bag research legendaries within a ball or two, but sometimes it can take about a dozen.

Field research rewards can never run away, so feel free to take a hundred red balls to catch 'em all. (Unless you are in a rural area where even red balls are in short supply.)
