A bunch of noob-questions (part one)

Hello, noob here. Yes we exist! And yes, we are frustrated that we are soooo far behind everybody else. Basically, my 6 year old son has bugged me for us to start playing Pokemon Go for several months and seeing as going through the registration proces was a nuisance, I have been putting it off forever. Well at the start of my sons winter break exactly 29 days ago, I finally relented and set up his account and went playing with him. Of course, before the week was over, I was the one doing all the playing and by the second week I had gotten obsessive. After 29 days I am now at level 25 but still feeling way behind the curve. I have been reading this forum for a bit, but still have some very noobish questions to ask?

1) In gym fights, do you actually have to "tap as fast as you can" as several very old articles on the net state. I would assume that the mon can only attack as fast as it can anyway, so wouldn't slower tapping be good enough?

2) Apart from Snorlax and Chansey I have been hatching mostly crap from my 10 km eggs, like 5 Mantines, 3 Miltanks, 3 Sudowoodos and 2 Pinecos. Is there any real use for these Mons at this point in the game? (yes, I have been hatching eggs like a madman spending quite a bit of dough on incubators in the process).

3) I have three Chanseys and really want a Blissey, but have been holding off. Which one of these should I evolve:

a) 82%. lvl.20. cp 790. A=11, D=14, S=12.
b) 89%. lvl.20. cp 814. A=13, D=15, S=12.
c) 82%. lvl.20. cp 826. A=15, D=10, S=12.

I'm thinking surely not the first one, but I'm torn between b and c. C should have higher cp, but b has higher IV.

4) I live in a small city with super-uninteresting mon. If I am lucky I catch an Eevee or two in a day, otherwise it is all super standard fare. However, I do have quite a few Eevees. I evolved a weak 62% Jolteon before I knew what I was doing. Then I used the nametrick to evolve a 91% Vapereon, which I have powered up as much as I currently can. But that's it. I am currently sitting on 170 Eevee candy and have a couple of solid IV Eevees. What I am considering is what to do. Should I use the naming-trick to get quality copies of the other evolutions or should I hold off using the naming-trick and see what happens randomly - I might get another good Vaporeon after all.

5) Are we sure that Magikarp still hatch from 2km eggs? I have hatched a silly amount of 2km eggs and have never seen Magikarp. I really need a solid IV Magikarp since my son is dying to get a Gyarados, which is his favourite Pokemon. My only high IV Magikarp is a 85% one, but that is level 1 (or 2) and is a cp 10, so it seems silly to evolve that one. Not at 400 magikarp candy yet, so there is still time, but has anybody hatched a Magikarp since gen 2?

6) I have a few decent defenders. I have three Snorlaxes, one Vapereon and will soon evolve a Blissey. But I need some solid attackers. I barely ever catch anything interesting in the wild, but I have a few that I need to figure out whether to invest in or not. I have 230k stardust (wasted a ton on useless pokemon in the first three weeks of playing - didn't realize how valuable this stuff is) Here they are:

a) Dragonite. 31%. lvl 19. cp 1776. A=5, D=9, S=0 - Steel Wing/Hurricane. I only have a pathetic 30 Dratini candy and my best dratini is at 76%.

b) Donphan. 51-62%. lvl 23. cp 1864. Counter/Heavy Slam. I have 128 Phanpy candy and five that are above 84%, including a 98% and a 93%. I have hatched a lot of Phanpies, barely ever caught one in the wild.

c) Jynx. 71%. lvl 23. A=4, D=14, S=14. Frost Breath/Avalanche. I only have 25 jynx candy, but nothing else to spend them on currently.

d) Kingler. 96%. lvl 20. A=13, D=15, S=15. Metal Claw/Water Pulse. I have 123 Krabby candy and a bunch of high IV krabbies as well, although none higher than 96%. Basically, I'm unsure if Kingler is of much use in general. Don't want to spend stardust unless worthwhile.

That's it for now. Hope I didn't bore you to death! :-)

i can answer some only ( level 26 ) playing from august so i can say you are doing amazingly fast ( or i am slow player )
3) the 89 chansey is pretty good to evolve but keep in mind your gyms as it may sit in the very end and have no use unless you have enough candy to keep raising it up at least to your level ( i had the same questions and the community replied on it with great info
5) i hatched a magikarp from a 2 km egg but keep in mind it has a cap of lvl 20 since it is hatched from an egg CP 130 or little more will be the max ( i would personally wait until you are higer level specially with the price of 400 for it

1) In gym fights, do you actually have to "tap as fast as you can" as several very old articles on the net state. I would assume that the mon can only attack as fast as it can anyway, so wouldn't slower tapping be good enough?

The fastest attack in game is fury cutter with 0,4 sec. Even this does not force you to tap as fast as you can. Fast tapping is not required. It is more important to look out for opponents attacks (yellow flash) and learn dodging.

(2) No, no real use for the other mons. Sometimes a niche for prestiging.

(3) Att-Stat is by far the most important for blissey. Use your 3rd one.

(4) The name-Trick works only once for each name. You may want to get one or more jolteon to battle gyarados, or a flareon, but in fact, you do not really need a good fire-attacker.

(6)

a Your dragonite has a defender's moveset.

b This low-IV-Donphan is not worth any stardust

c Low att-stat, but perfect moveset to slay dragonite. I would consider powering her up.

d Don't invest into kingler.

Hope this helps.

Sorry for layout, i don't manage to get my text structured..... They must have changed something.

I strongly agree with all these answers. Exactly what I would have said, but less typing.

Just to expand on an idea...I assume you have read about how the gyms work and how a gym gains prestige. Because there are common gyms defenders with large weaknesses (ice from dragonite, fighting for tyranitar, electric for gyarados, and water/grass for rhydon) you ideally want at least one mon of each type at a lower CP (1200-1500) to help you train your own gym and one mon of each type at level 30 to take down another. In general, I have found this to be a better use of potions as well as more fun (get to see/use a better variety).

This is the idea behind having multiple jolteon (electabuzz works too, if you use a wild one at 1300 with electric moves, just keep him). It also applies to your jynx (or shellder/cloyster or swinub/piloswine). There are several common, respectable ice attackers. They just need to have double ice moves (not psychic for jynx, no hydro pump on cloyster, etc).

1) You don't need to smash your phone as fast as you can ,there is something called cooldown :D.

2) none of them is useful.

3) Personally, I don't mind about Chansey IV. I even powered up 15/4/15 Chansey just want to surpise an attacker with low cp but high stat. But this one is depend on you want more stat or more cp
.
4) You can use your name trick to get a so called good attacker like Flareon since you are lacking attacker. I haven't try this one myself but I heard FS/OH is good.

5) Haven't seen Magikarp in 2km egg since gen2 come.

6) Vaporeon is a good attacker you should power it up.I don't recommend Dragonite since in your situation Dratini's candy is so precious. b) and d) are good candidates in your situation now as well as Vaporeon. But I suggest you to wait for better mon and power up only Vaporeon.

  1. Don't tap-spam when fighting in a gym. Doesn't help you.
  2. Useless for attacking, defending and prestiging. They look cool though. Delete or save, up to you.
  3. I'd go for C, but the slight CP difference beween that and B, after full evolution, may or may not be relevant (maybe 20-40 CP points). Is your gym scene so finely carved up such that 20-40 CP points matters?

4 & 6. Your number 1 priority is to evolve an army of high level Eevees (forget about IVs for now) to Vapes, Jolts and Flareons. Again, forget about IVs for now, what you need right now are high level Eevees. Keep and evolve all your level 23+ Eevees. Don't make the mistake of evolving a low level high CP Eevee and trying to stardust them to high level Eevees, the dust cost at your level is not worth it. Save your high IV Eevees for later. For now you will need the dust for tier-1 attackers.

  1. Same goes for Gyarados - don't evolve a high IV but low level one; to get maximum benefit now, evolve your high level ones now as they will serve you very well and cost you exactly zero stardust to get to a good serviceable level.
  2. Espeon, Eggdude, Machamp, Heracross, Gyarados Rhydons are also good attackers if you don't have Dragonite/Tyranitar. Focus on type-matchups and you'll be golden.

Damn, should have read this before I went Pokemon hunting just before. I did infact catch a high level low IV Eevee that I deleted because of its low IV. Should have kept it!

  1. Magikarp no longer hatch from eggs. They took it out of possible hatches when they added the gen 2 pokemon. The best way to get them is to visit a water biome or nest.

Answers below, to the best of my knowledge. I am new to the game to (L27, started in January)

1) In gym fights, do you actually have to "tap as fast as you can" as several very old articles on the net state. I would assume that the mon can only attack as fast as it can anyway, so wouldn't slower tapping be good enough?
- No, learn to dodge. Generally, there is a rhythm to it and you can fit 1-3 quick moves in between each of their quick moves before dodging. Look for the yellow flash at the bottom of the screen - you have to dodge less than 0.7 seconds after the yellow flash (which isn't that hard to do...)

- Some of 'em aren't great, but if you have a SudoWoodo with rock throw, take it to a battle! The animation is awesome! Miltank and Foretress have niche purposes.

3) I have three Chanseys and really want a Blissey, but have been holding off. Which one of these should I evolve:

a) 82%. lvl.20. cp 790. A=11, D=14, S=12.
b) 89%. lvl.20. cp 814. A=13, D=15, S=12.
c) 82%. lvl.20. cp 826. A=15, D=10, S=12.

I'm thinking surely not the first one, but I'm torn between b and c. C should have higher cp, but b has higher IV.

  • I can't answer this question without knowing the movesets. I would take the one with Zen Headbutt/Dazzling Gleam or, if you don't have that, Pound/Dazzling Gleam. The IV differences won't compensate for the moveset difference.

Should I use the naming-trick to get quality copies of the other evolutions or should I hold off using the naming-trick and see what happens randomly - I might get another good Vaporeon after all.
- I would classify the Eevees into two "buckets". If you have one with >90%IV, evolve it to something really good using the naming trick. If you get a good moveset, power it up. If you have one that is high level by "meh" IVs, evolve it and randomly see what you get. You will get something with a decent moveset that you can use in battles, but you don't have to power it up. Just use it as-is.

- Don't know.

6) I have a few decent defenders. I have three Snorlaxes, one Vapereon and will soon evolve a Blissey. But I need some solid attackers. I barely ever catch anything interesting in the wild, but I have a few that I need to figure out whether to invest in or not. - Bad moveset, bad IV, low CP I wouldn't power this up. Consider using it when prestiging a gym.

b) Donphan. 51-62%. lvl 23. cp 1864. Counter/Heavy Slam. I have 128 Phanpy candy and five that are above 84%, including a 98% and a 93%. I have hatched a lot of Phanpies, barely ever caught one in the wild.
- Low IV, not a great mon. Don't power it up.

c) Jynx. 71%. lvl 23. A=4, D=14, S=14. Frost Breath/Avalanche. I only have 25 jynx candy, but nothing else to spend them on currently.
- This is a good counter to Dragonite. I'd use it as that, but probably wouldn't power it up.

d) Kingler. 96%.
- Kingler isn't great - I wouldn't power it up. But consider evolving some of your highest IV Krabbies and trying them out!

That's it for now. Hope I didn't bore you to death! :-)

Hi, I've played since August 2016 and I'm currently lvl 32. Here are my answers based on my experiences and knowledge:
1. You don't have to tap as fast as you can, that would only waste your human energy. Also, learn to dodge in gym fights, if you are new and not used to dodging all attacks, then start to learn by dodging the charged moves only, after you get used to it, then try to dodge all attacks.
2. Those pokemon are completely useless if we're talking about gym battles or the upcoming PvP.
3. I recommend you to evolve the one with 89% IV. The reason why its CP is lower than the one with 82% IV is because attack stats accounts more into CP than hp and def. CP is proportional to atk * (hp*def)^0.5. Blissey is gonna be used to defend gym anyways so evolve your 89% IV chansey which has better def.
4. Don't use the name trick unless it would be used to evolve a high IV eevee since it only works once per name. Personally I only consider 91% IV or more eevees to use the name trick upon them. Priorities are: Vap, Esp, Jolt, Flar, Umb. I prioritize jolteon over flareon because jolt is strong against gyarados who has double weakness against eletric-type moves. Save your best eevees until you get the best moveset for each eeveelution with the priorities I mentioned. I evolved 5 Espeons (1 by using Sakura, 4 by walking 10km) and finally get confusion+future sight (the best moveset).
5. Not sure but I think we won't get any magikarp from any egg anymore. Be patient! 400 magikarp candies are no cheap cost. Unless you don't really care about a super good gyarados or you have super excessive candies, just wait until you get a magikarp with high IV and CP. When I decided to evolve my 84% IV high CP magikarp into gyarados, I've saved more than 740 magikarp candies, it was my best magikarp and I knew I could evolve another one quite soon. Now I have 660 magikarp candies and I'm still waiting for a 91%++ IV magikarp.
6. Don't invest any stardust into any of them. Be patient and wait for good mons with good IVs and movesets then you can power them up with your saved stardust.

Yes, blissey is gonna be used for defending, but her defense and HP are already high, so eother of those IV's are gonna have the lowest impact on her performance, 15 extra Attack on the other hand will have a high impact on her overall performance in battle.

  1. No, there's an attack buffer, depending on the speed of the attack you are probably gonna want to tap x times then dodge (if you dodge) then tap x times again, depending on how many attacks you can get between the defender's attacks.
  2. Not really, if you get one with 2 attacks of the same type, you could use them to attack/prestiege against the relevant type (ex. water attacks mantine vs fire or rock)
  3. I'd probably try with the C one, Blissey's base attack stat (129) is pathetic so a 15 attack IV will have the highest impact on her overall performance in battle, getting your pokemon as high as posible in gyms is important.
  4. Vaporeon is still the best one, but you really can't go wrong with any of them, they are all the best of their type (except for espeon and umbreon), what could go wrong is the moveset, but that's random anyway, I'd just evolve randomly in the hopes of getting another vaporeon.
  5. Magikarp doesn't hatch anymore:
    https://thesilphroad.com/egg-distances
  6. Kingler has a very high attack stat, but what you want in an attacker is either 2 attacks of the same type (with STAB) or 2 attacks that have an overlaping strength (Ex. Charizard with Fire and flying attacks vs plant), another option is gunnng for a specific pokemon that's common in gyms (Ex. Houndoom with Dark and Fire attacks vs exeggutor). Out of the ones you listed, I wouldn't invest dust on any of them.
