Battles Won for a Pokemon. How do they happen, and how do you check them?

OK, when you start a pokemon battle in a gym, it tells you "Battles Won" for you and your opponent.

I basically want to know how "Battles Won" works.

What counts as a "Battle Won"? Is it only attacking? Can you get a won battle defending, and if so, how? Do mons in your attack group get a "Battle won" even if they never see battle?

Then, is there a way to check a pokes "Battles Won" without taking it into a battle. This might be useful when deciding what mons to power up. If you have a L30 mon that has won 2000 battles for you, might consider sending some dust it's way...

Every mon in your attacking party gets a battle won every time you defeat a defending pokemon. Defending doesn't grow the count but it does grow the temporary battles won count you can see when you click on the pokemon in the gym.

As far as I know there is no other way to check than taking it to battle.

I keep hoping they’ll add this info to the Pokémon screen. They’re tracking it. Why not show it?

As an addendum, the defending Pokemon gets a temporary "win" count from each battle instance with one of the following conditions:
-All of the attackering Pokemon have fainted with no more backup or new attacker joining
-All of the attackers left the battle
-The battle timed out before the defender gets defeated
